GT working on?
Well, no new announcements from GT lately. Just wonder, are there any new cool stuff you're working on?

Maybe GForum2? GComm2? Some new products?

I'm visiting your blog almost every day but there are no info about stuff you're working on and as there are almost no info from Alex in this forums, I'm just curious.

Really would like to know. It eats me alive Cool

Hi deadroot,
I quite agree.
I like GTs blog entries about poker, gadgets and so on,
but
a roadmap for glinks, gcomm or especially for gforum would be nice too.

Hi GT,
I know, it is not nice to be asked again and again, when gforum or other products finally finished or updated.
But as you can see in many threads, YOUR clients are interested.
We are all clients, you should not simply ignore us!

Sometimes it's better to answer, than just say nothing. Even if an answer costs much time.

When I were a interested new user, visiting this forum. And I would read threads like this one.
I would just close my browser window...

Just a opinion from one of your clients

Some theories:

1. The GT folks are ill and cannot work - gall bladder surgery? Incarcerated?

2. They are being acquired so have to go into silent mode for a time.

3. They've completely re-designed and re-coded all their products and will shock us with an announcement tomorrow.

4. They've tied all their products into a killer CMS.

Can someone check, whether the sun tower is still there Wink

Seriously, the only one who cares about the clients in this forum is Andy.
I know Andy is not from GT, but if he was not there in the last months, it would have been very very quiet in this forum.

Of course, Andy is interested in selling his plugins, but should not GT interested in selling their products, too.
Perhaps GT lost their contact to the small people...

I hope there is not a parallel here to an experience I had many years ago.

I ran a BBS on what was considered the top platform of the day TBBS and made by eSoft. This sucker was coded in assembly language and lean and mean like most
of the GT products.

Somewhere along the way the company lost its direction and there was like a year and a half lull in updates or forum activity.

Suddenly a new upgraded version came out and most sysops desperately upgraded. I recall the upgrade being expensive but hey, we were thirsty.

Turned out the upgrade was a minor fix and a few cosmetic changes.

Then they lowered the boom.

The head of the company had left and what remained was sold off and TBBS died - but they refused to release it as open source.

today I had a look on early announcements in this forum.
From Nov 15, 2004 to Oct 12, 2006 the GT Dev Team did exactly what we are all waiting for the last year.
In this period they wrote many posts on what they are working on...

Is there still a GT Dev Team out there Smile

Would be great, if you could give us a sign of life Wink

Hi Everyone,

First off, sorry about the lack of updates being made. No, we are not going anywhere or being sold or stopping development. As lame as it sounds, we have just been too busy. Last year saw an 80% growth here and we've been struggling to keep up with the demand. We now have over 20 people working here in Vancouver, and our hosting side of things has exploded to over 300 servers.

The bulk of our time has been doing a lot of custom development on sites big and small using products like Gossamer Forum and Gossamer Links as a base. We've been creating a lot of cool plugins and enhancements as part of this development. Sadly, we haven't been getting the new stuff released to everyone and definitely haven't got core updates out in time. Even Ian who has been managing our blog has gotten pulled away and we haven't been able to put out blog posts.

We're going to be changing that in the next month or two and put a lot of resources into polishing up the plugins we've done, and getting the code released that has been sitting in beta for a while. So, while I recognize that I've said this before many a time, please do stay tuned and you should see some exciting news.

Thanks again for the patience, and if you do have questions, please feel free to reply, or drop me an email or send me a private message and I'll do my best to get back to you quickly.

Cheers,

Alex

it does'nt matter how much work there is.
There should be at least one person from GT who's watching the posts in this forum.
This should not cost so much time.
15 minutes each day should do it...

So what do you think about a Roadmap for each of your products?

Hi Matthias,

Yes, Adrian (brewt) does try to reply to a lot of the technical posts and provide some answers/assistance where possible. As for a roadmap, previously we've been pulled off into doing a lot of custom work, so a roadmap without any meaningful dates would not be that useful (and indeed would have changed considerably as we build and develop things for other people). We are now going to start integrating a lot of the custom work we've been doing back into the products, so you'll see some good stuff coming out soon.

Cheers,

Alex

Not much to change, but if you want to release gforum in the next days these changes should be tested.

And I’d be very pleased if you tell us, what features the new gforum will bring.

Hi Matthias.,

Ian is working on a blog post to showcase some of the things that will be out soon and in the new versions. We will be releasing a new FileMan and Gossamer Forum shortly. FileMan is a complete rewrite, all "ajaxified" (man I hate that word). Gossamer Forum is a mjor overhaul and will include new features like social media integration, improved rss support, positive feedback system, post tagging, and a host of other things. We'll walk through some of this in detail in the next week or two. We're really pushing to get this out soon.

Sounds like you just started the development process.
The alpha version is I think older than a year!!!

Hi guys,

Ian the GT blogger here - Just thought I'd answer some of your questions:

GForum v.2.0.0 Release Date:
The targeted BETA release date for GForum v2.0.0 as of right now is August 31, 2008. You definitely will not have wait another year.

Fileman v3.0 Release Date:
We are currently testing the Beta version of FileMan v3.0 for bugs - release date will most likely be the same time as GForum v.2.0.0 (if not earlier).

Luna-based template for Gossamer Community:
This is definitely on our list of product updates - again, expect it roughly around the same time as the GForum v2.0.0 release.

Pricing & Upgrading:
There hasn't been a final decision made on pricing yet - but rest assured the final price will very attractive.

Everything still on schedule?

Re: [LordStryfe] GT working on? In reply to
We are pushing real hard to get our projects out on schedule - sleepless nights are quite common right around this time.

We've got 5 developers working on Gossamer Forum 2 (the most we've had on any project) and it's still proving to be big undertaking, due to the amount of redesign (both system and style) and legacy code that needs to be rejiggered to work. To be frank, given the amount of changes and quality we're striving for, our target of the 31st is looking a bit hazy as of now.

What I can say is that FileMan v3 BETA is on schedule and will be released by the end of the week.

The user-side functionality of Gossamer Forum 2 will also be pushed out in some way on Friday, so you can see and play with all the neat new features such as tagging, favourites, reporting posts (report abuse, spammers, etc) and revamped profile pages with social media integration.

In the interim, you can add the META element (<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=7" />) to force IE8 to emulate IE7. Will not work if you place it incorrectly. The META element should be the first child of your HEAD element.

Hi Jason,

We're spread pretty thin right now on manpower with all the projects we

At that point, we hope to have GForum 2 and GCommunity 2 done and

How can GT start new projects, when the already started projects (gforum 2.0) are not finished yet?
Has GTs priority changed from building software to building websites?

It is a pity to have to wait that long and it is a pity that there is a lack of communication.
I still appreciate the work and products of GT and I am looking forward to seeing the new releases.
It´s nice that there are still many active users supporting each other and the products in this forum.
Probably at the moment its them that keep this product line alive.
On the other hand the "big" projects will hopefully influence future releases Smile.
Just my 2 cents.

I don't think GT or any other company in their right mind would spend months or years of time coding, just so the new release could be upgraded easily from different configuration. In addition, doubt most GLinks users would mind spending 10 minutes more while doing manual upgrade (if new version can be easily upgraded from old one) to have new features within GLinks.

I have no clues on what exact features GLinks is working on right now, however based on their previous upgrades, I would not be surprised to see better RSS feed ability and/or New Listings page update, Top Listings page update.. etc and few other features in the next release.

But in anycase, GT have never let their users down. In my opinion, currently GLinks is so far ahead of its competitors, its hard to figure out who is number 2.

Hi Matthias,

I am also eagerly waiting for some updates for GLinks (or atleast to hear about them) & understand that its been a long time since we heard anything from GT about it. However I just don't think it is right to write-off Alex, Jack, Adrian & GT team just yet - I am pretty sure, they are much more diligent then many other script developer.

Its been ages since GLinks (aka Links SQL) has been an integral part of our sites, and is also GT's flagship product. I doubt GT team would let down its product or client-base that easily.

Again, I share your frustration, and am hoping GT is also reading this thread too.

The problem is: you are "hoping"...
You should be SURE that they are reading AND responding to forum posts.

I think they already have. I have an german translation of glinks and they did not translate glinks 3.3 into german.
Normaly the new release of glinks was translated into german in 2 or 3 weeks. 3.3 was released in May 09 and I still have to use glinks 3.2 :-(

My dear friend, it was just a polite way of writing.

Here is what I should have written.

I am SURE that they are reading the forum. I will not back-down from something that I am this sure of.

In past I have had phone conversations with both Alex & Jack, and they are just not the type to abandon their user-base.

**** edit ****
P.S..... Sorry, don't take it personal if the post sounds too strong. (I have 5 licenses and would love to see & make updates on different sites with new options & features)
I am also frustrated same as you, however comeon GT team is also made up of humans and do have their list of priorities. So I am *sure* they are reading the posts and will also understand that their user-base has been waiting for long time and is looking forward for some update.

I also have a few licenses and been faithful to GT products for almost 10 years.
GT team has been extremely helpful in the past and they are great.

But, I make a living from a few web sites which are based on GLinks and Community.
When I do not see updates as promised, I start to worry.
What disturbs me more, is that there is no reply to this thread from official GT team for over a year.

I know they are humans, but if they can not post one or two posts every month just to keep us updated...Frown

If Andy wasn't here and helping people, I think this forum would be dead.

I agree.

It takes a few minutes for a member of staff to post a message. With all the concern in this thread you'd think they would respond to provide assurance, even if it's just "We will provide more info in due course" - but......they haven't.

They have neglected the people that made GT what it is today. I can't believe people still come here hoping for updates. My advice would be to move on. There are better products out there with active communities made by companies treating their clients properly.

Hi Wychwood, you are right, posting a comment should not take much time.
But I think GT Stuff wrote all excuses they can think off in the last years. There are no serious excuses left anymore...

For me, it's not that easy to leave GT
1. I spent quite a lot of money for glinks...
2. I like my page with glinks
3. I don't know how to integrate my database into joomla...

Hello everyone,

Our deepest apologies for the silence on the boards.

Things have been going well here at GT, with the exception of resource
allocation. Because we've been so busy, we readily admit that our
products have taken a bit of a back seat. This economic downturn has
affected everyone, including many of our customers, and we've been doing
everything we can to assist them, which unfortunately takes resources
away from updating our core products.

We make ourselves available though via our support form, and we even
post our toll-free number on the website, so if you wish to stay in
touch, please do feel free.

Once we get a handle on things, we do plan to get back to what got us to
where we are today, which is the core suite of products.

In the meantime, we're now a lot more settled into our new offices, check out
the images, etc. here:

Thanks for hanging in there with us,

I'm just confused as to why a company would effectively be putting itself out of business by assisting other companies? I mean as a business plan if your not running your business it dies. Would it not better help companies to have a better product to run their sites?

Jack's post didn't make sense, unless I've misunderstood it. How does an economic downturn mean they are busier?

Word spreads fast and it spreads even faster over the Internet. Word will eventually get around that Gossamer-Threads neglect customers and don't meet deadlines etc. If they're that busy they must be earning money so can afford to pay staff to frequent the forum and work on their products.

Hi Everyone,

I know there has not been nearly as much communication here as there should have been, and for that I'm truly sorry.

Unfortunately, we haven't posted an update as we haven't had good news to post. Despite our best intentions (and we know where that road leads to), we have not been able to dedicate the people needed to product development. Each time we try, we get pulled away by big projects and we end up spending more and more time on custom development which has been allowing us to continue to grow. As you know, what makes our products so good is their flexibility. We've been using them as a base for sites small and large, a few of which we try and feature on our blog and our way of communicating what we've been doing..

We have every intention of returning to our core products and putting out a fresh set of updates, I just don't want to promise anything. I know that's not that helpful an answer, and partly why we have been so quiet, but I hope it's better then silence.

We do continue to support our products, and actively develop and work on them for customers. If you do have a project that has been on hold, we are more then happy to look at the job and see if it's something we can do for you.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me either through private message, email (alex at gossamer-threads dot com) or by phone (604) 687-5804.

Cheers,

Alex

Hey Alex,

Sounds like its time to add a staff member to work on GT stuff and NEVER move that person no matter the circumstance. When you hire that person stash them in the basement of that new office and other then payday forget they exists.

Trust me, it's something we've talked about many a time - that's how we got the frontend of the forum done. But then some cool new project comes along that we don't have staff for and he gets pulled kicking and screaming onto it.

All joking aside though, it is something we are really looking at, as we have done so many different things over the past few years, that to put them together as an updated product just makes sense. It's just hard to get the developer time when so many immediate paid projects are pressing and requiring time.

Cheers,

Alex

That says it all - the updates you’re providing are all FREE. I have been waiting silently because I still like the free updates and understand the alternative is to charge for updates.

Maybe its time to take a poll and see how many people would be interested in paying for updates?

Poor Andy got grief for charging an annual fee to cover support for his plugin. I cried when I heard the news w00t now simply beg and plead for help, sent beer once to bribe him...

Everyone likes free but then complains when things are not done fast enough, I am silently waiting for my FREE update. YET would consider a reasonable update fee to get things moving.

Not 100% sure on this but a few years ago when I purchased GForum I was told that only updates for the current version were free and that you would have to pay an additional fee if you wanted to upgrade to the next release.

I actually emailed in requests for customer jobs but were told they would be in the next release and that they won't do them then. Sadly I have already begun looking for newer software that is more up to date and offers more support. As far as paid updates I don't mind those as long as they are useless updates. Projects should be prioritized by the company and new projects should not be started until others are completed. It displays to customers that the company is not reliable about meetings deadlines and working with existing customers. Everyone has been hit with the economy but driving away your customer base to other companies doesn't help your companies prospects.

Your are right! We are customers, too!
Why do we have to wait! Better GT should tell new customers. Sorry we have no time for your project...
I think we paid for updates when we owned GT Products. It's not fair, to prefer new customers with new projects...

At the moment I can not see any future for GT Products. In the past, they promised updates in half a year or next year.
But did you realize, that both, Alex and Jack did not tell any timeframe. This are really bad news... Crazy

I was about to buy the Message Board, a year ago. Decided to wait for that update. Why? Because it would integrate perfectly with my GLinks and community etc etc.
A year later, I have already gone elsewhere after reading that there are no updates, ETA or anything.
Not just that. Im looking for options on another CMS for both my links sites.

I love links, got it down on how it works and am very comfortable on modifying it.
But I also see its falling behind in many many areas.

Ive used GT since links flat file, beta and free... before the sql version, when Alex was the only one around and the site looked like it was attacked by a spider (black logo red letters I think). Actually before that but dont remember the design.

Its a terrible shame, that I consider myself a loyal customer to the bone and I have to go looking for options because I dont see the product evolving to todays needs.

Waited and waited, the same thing GT is doing to us, I myself will have to do. Business is business, I too will have to go elsewhere looking for better business.

I only own 2 licenses, Im guessing im not a big client, but I can tell you Im a big supporter and recommend your products to every web developer I know and even teach them how to use it.
Not any more. Them as I, need more from our CMS.

Sorry GT, but like you, I too need to move on.

It's risky risking one's business model based on softwares which have no openly published roadmap short term (quarterly) and long term (yearly). 7 years back gmail and atmail were at par on features. Look at where atmail is now.

Says it all really. Obviously BBQ'ing is Gossamer's priority.

....and I do not believe for one minute that staff are so busy that they do not have time to visit the forum. For God's sake, they could logon for 5 minutes at home in the evening and answer a couple of posts.

The bottom line is they don't care about the forum any more or the customers that use it, for whatever reason. Maybe their scripts aren't selling well and they are focusing on hosting and customization work - I don't know.

Hypertherm - atmail looks superb. Their mail client interface looks amazing.

In 2002 gmail and atmail were almost similar in feature sets. Today atmail is more of a groupware (exchange alternative on linux) solution, though we settled for axigen (again a wonderful true exchange alternative). Axigen is from same company which got ravantivirus (AV SW for Linux Mail servers much before ClamAV was stable) but product was killed by M$ which bought everything and integrated into their SW/offerings as something of their own.

Thanks

Hi Guys,

Not sure what I can add here except what I said in post #83 and #85. But to try and answer some of your questions/comments:

Payoo, Ian writes the blog posts and those are not taking away from developer time, so one is not really related to the other (although I understand this may have been made in jest). The posts help a lot in attracting people to Gossamer and coming to work here. More developers == more we can get done. =)

Sandra, yes, we have thought about making paid updates to prioritize development higher. It might be the way forward, but I realize that might be just as unappetizing to a lot of people here. However when the alternative is no updates, or really lengthy delays, it's not much of a choice is it. Again, the main problem is our current paid workload greatly outpaces what we do in terms of product sales. We have 25 full time people and actively hiring more to keep up.

LordStryfe, sorry to hear about that. Not sure where we dropped the ball there, but if you are at all still interested, please drop me an email with what you had asked and I'd be happy to help.

Paul, we banned you from this forum a number of years back for your cross site scripting attacks against other members and denial of services attacks. I'm not sure why you keep persisting on coming back. The trolling and abuse and sniping you continue to level on Andy is unjustified and not welcome.

Cheers,

Alex

The forum is not easily accessible from the Gossamer Threads landing page.

For sure I believe Jack should come out and officially declare the product line R.I.P.

It's the month of love 2011 folks but all good things come to an end.

I've lost track of how many licenses I have for GT products - should be at least six.

My custom Links installed crashed and burnt a couple years ago and I was awaiting upgrades etc. before trying to resurrect.

Not to be.

It appears - G.T. will wait us all out under we get bored, die or go away Shocked
