MyLinks SQL
Hokay,

I posted in the Gossamer Forum forum asking if anyone could think of any plugins that they'd like me to create and I was asked about MyLinks for Links SQL so I decided to post here.

I'll consider restarting this project as there seems to be several people requesting it.

I'll just need people to give me a clear list of features they'd like to see.

This will be a paid plugin as the last version was around 100kb in size which obviously takes a lot of work.

Hi Paul,

A few ideas/suggestions:

1. Allow the user to organise links in folders and move items around - sort of like the browser.cgi - so I could ex. make a new folder - name it 'constrauction' and then dump links there

2. Possibility of working across Links installations so you can bookmark items across installations (perhaps even products - ex. save a thread from a forum)

That's a start

Cheers

Hi,

Thanks. Folders is something I'll add. Not sure about the second suggestion though. In order to bookmark a thread from Gossamer Forum or save a link from another Links SQL installation you'd have to gain access to the database for that installation to retrieve the details of that bookmark which would require usernames and passwords and creating a new GT::SQL object and I think it may get a little messy.

I'm adding the ability to let users save custom bookmarks so that may implement your suggestion *in a way* as it will let you save bookmarks relating to other sites.

I am very interested in this plugin, and would be very eager to purchase it should it be released.

Possible changes:

1) Upgrade script from old version. I think lsql 2.12 brought in the enumerated ID's for the lsql_Users table, so I guess any new script will now be using the user ID rather than the username in the lsql_mylinks join table. I'd like to be able to import/convert my existing lsql_mylinks to use the new system.

2) I don't think that the grouping worked properly in the old version. No matter what the grouping was set to, you always had the full category path above the link. I'd like to turn this off or put it in folders in the new version.

3) Perhaps some integration with the pagebuilder plugin, so that you can have a proper title_linked on the mylinks pages.

4) Given that you can already update certain user settings in the mylinks script, it might also be useful to be able to update contact details and passwords via the script.

Thanks for the suggestions. The new plugin can be installed alongside the original plugin as the plugin file names and templates are different to the original, so whilst you set up the new version you can leave the old one installed. I will make a seperate upgrade script instead of building it into the plugin.

What will it coast (I have already payed for your last version)?

Also, I remember deleting a user from the lsql database and that user's links are still listed. Can you fix this in the new one?

The pagebuilder plugin allows you to create pages with "breadcrumbed" navigation as such:

Home > Help Pages > How to Use X > More Info > Details

It would be quite nice to have similar functionality in the mysqlinks script, particularly as it may constitute a large section of the site in some instances. So, for example, on the mylsqllinks main page you can have as the navigation:

Home > My Links > Main Page

and then for the other pages:

Home > My Links > User Settings and Options > Update Contact Details

and for the categories

Home > My Links > Information and Technology > Other Custom Folder > Page 2

etc etc. Just increases usability, makes navigation more intuitive, and makes everything look more professional.

Also, another thing, that may or may not come under the mylinks plugin. There has been some mention of need for improved category support. Some people (including me) would like to link parallel categories together and develop some way of managing this.

For example, if you had a database of website design related sites, you might have a taxonomy constituted as such:

Home > By Region > United Kingdom > Flash Specialists > Page 1
Home > By Region > United States > Flash Specialists > Page 1

as well as

Home > By Speciality > Flash > United Kingdom > Page 1
Home > By Speciality > Flash > United States > Page 2

things become more complex when you have additional categories and properties of links. It would be useful if you could just define some fields or join tables as such:

Join Table 1 --> Country LinkID
Join Table 2 --> SpecialityID LinkID
Join Table 3 --> PriceRange LinkID
Join Table 4 --> NumberOfEmployees LinkID

Then, the plugin would automatically update the catlinks table and allow you to have a much more sophisticated directory and category structure. If you could make a decent UI for this and make it intuitive there should be some demand for this, as it seems like a logical necessity of any directory. Or perhaps not. Unimpressed

Yes, I started earlier this evening.

Quote:
Do you have any idea of how long it will take you?

Currently not. The basic mylinks functionality shouldn't take more than a few days to finish, it is just all the extra features that may take some time and also the templates are time consuming, more so than the code on occasions. Currently I've added shells for 11 templates and I expect a few more will be needed so you may be looking at 15 templates. I hope to at least to have the bulk done within two weeks. This may be less if I get time to do lots of work on it.

Quote:
What will it coast (I have already payed for your last version)?

I'm not 100% sure yet on the price. It depends on what features are added along the way amongst other things. I'd say defintely under $75. I will deduct $40 for anyone who purchased the original mylinks.

Yes this was an issue as I forgot to add foreign keys. This will be fixed.

Fantastic! I am very happy you are starting this back up. You can count me in for a purchase. I am requesting the following features.

Feature Suggestions:

1. Link Notes/Comments/Reviews

- Sometimes we later forget why we have bookmarked a link, also when emailing others these links, it may be good to tell them exactly what is special about them, or to pass on a short summary/review. A single comment field may suffice.

2. Link Checking

- After the links are in the system a while, likely there would be bad ones.

Before looking stupid by sending out a email saying how great these broken links are, it would be fantastic for a quick link check to give us the edit/delete/keep options.

Glad to see you back. You are one of the more insightful people here (There are many) and I've learned a lot from your posts. I'm not sure if this has been said before but adding a catagory (and then all of its subcatagories) would be nice.

I was also toying a 'quick add' idea. A rundown - Remember when a bunch of you guys were on the '404 error pages' postings. Well, we have a catagory in our directory for '404 error pages'. It would be nice, to email a catagory to someone, with a 'quick add to MyLinks' icon. Just a thought.

I was thinking about getting my plugin to add in the ID column to the users table....any thoughts on that?....maybe it would be easier just to keep using the username. It poops on the idea of relational databases a little but that's Alex's fault for not having an ID column Wink

Hmmm,

I think bookmarking a catagory would make more sense. If you bm all of the links and choose an incorrect catagory in error you'd have potentially thousands of links, plus not really knowing where they were from.

I'm not sure if community adds the ID column. Nevertheless, in the long run the ID column is going to be a necessity, and as soon as it is added in the mylinks plugin might has problems, given that users may be able to alter their username as in gforum. Perhaps it might be useful to check with Alex?

Personally, I would find this very useful.

Paul, could you add the functionality so we can decide what to call the mylinks script when we install it? (So, during the install there is a text box where one can alter the name of the script, so it can be MyFavouriteEquities.cgi rather than mylinks.cgi).

Re: [cwi] MyLinks SQL In reply to
You can change the name (its mylinks2.cgi by default) - you'd just have to update the hyperlinks in the templates.

Adding a plugin option is a possibility but it would mean I'd have to load that option for each template - it would probably be easier done with a global....or one other solution is for me to change all hyperlinks to "?" which takes the current file name being viewed as the link target.

Re: [Paul] MyLinks SQL In reply to
Small update.

So far the features implemented are the basic mylinks features such as adding links and deleting links. I've also added the folder related code. Admin can set a limit for the number of folders a user can make and also can set a total for the number of allowed saved links. Links can be moved between folders and when deleting a folder you can delete all links or move them to another existing folder. When adding new links to your mylinks account the link will be placed into a default folder ready to be moved by the user to their desired custom folder. I *may* add a user option to let them set a folder of their choice into which new links will go by default but I'm not 100% sure there is a need as the default folder works exactly the same. By the way, the default folder name and description are also customizable by admin.

The feature I implemented today is link recommendations. You can recommend a link to one or more friends and can provide a custom message to each friend. I've setup the html and perl code to allow you to add extra friend fields, so there is no limit to how many people you can send recommendations to. the email for the recommendations is template based, as is pretty much everything - I've tried to make it as easy to customize as possible.

Paul,

Quick question... I like the ability to have a surfer click on the "bookmark" link next to each link in my directory and have an interim page load saying something to the effect of:

"You are now adding 'LINK TITLE", "LINK URL" to your bookmarks"

If they have an account, a cookie has been set which will cause the page to say the link was added, if they are a first time user, they will see the above information and then have the option to create an account to actually save that link.

The reasoning behind this is that by allowing that interim page, you create more spider food for the search engines. Each of those interim pages has the link title and url which work wonders for the SEs, however if when they click to bookmark a link they simply get a login screen, that benefit is lost.

Just some feedback on what was a nice hack for me with the old standard links 2.0 version with cookies.

MyLinks is dynamic and so even with an interim page, it wouldn't exist as soon as the user left the page and so the search engines wouldn't spider it.

Have you been able to add the features listed below in? I am interested in both, but would pick the comment feature for overall usefulness because so often I bookmark a link, yet do not recall the exact reason a month later when scanning a list of bookmarks...

I could add, modify users, but not delete users. Today, I tried it again. Delete users still didn't work. Then I uninstalled MyLinks2 and successfully deleted the user. Hi Paul,

I installed the last file you sent me, but the problem was still there. Then I went over some of the core files and found there was a typo that turned to be a bug in Install.pm line#214:

get_file('mylinks2_folders.schema.fk'). I changed it to:

get_file('mylinks2_custom.schema.fk'),

and changed mylinks2_folders.schema.fk and mylinks2_custom.schema.fk back to the first ones (..fk => 'Username').

Now it seems working fine.

Do you think the following change is better,

or my_folder_user_username_fk => 'my_user_username_fk' is?

Hi Paul,

Before I completely make a mess of the new tables, please can you just give some hints for moving all the information in the old MyLinks to the new one?

I assume I can do this with an Update SQL command - I'm just not too sure what the command is when more than one table is involved. I hope it is possible?

Thanks,

Re: [afinlr] MyLinks SQL In reply to
My bad. On line 72 in MyLinks2.pm you'll see:

Code:
my $span = $html->toolbar($page, $high, $total, $IN->url);

To fix the bug just move it down to line 88, just above:

Code:
print $IN->header();

That should fix it. I'll update the plugin asap.

Hi Paul,

I've been away so I'm a little late on the reply....

Well, I guess with links located in multiple categories the plug should save the single link and not the multiple listings. The previous MyLinks DB saved just one link but showed problems with totals and display totals. I spent a lot of time customizing the templates and ended up uninstalling the whole thing because of these problems. Basically I'd just like to see the plug handle links in multiple categories and have mylinks save only one listing while displaying correct saved totals and display totals ( User chooses display 10 and they see 10 saved links displayed ). I'm using globals to allow users to submit/modify to multiple categories, so I can really buy the upgrade with knowing this is supported. I'd really love to use you plug so I hope you can come up with something if MyLinks2 is not already capable of doing this. Maybe others can provide some ideas about how this should work as well. That's about all I can offer without using the new version. If you would like me to test it out for mult categories just let me know. I'd be glad to help.

Thanks Paul

Re: [afinlr] MyLinks SQL In reply to
Here is the script to upgrade to MyLinks2. Just run it from your Links SQL cgi directory.

I've tested it briefly and it worked - the only problem you may encounter is moving the date from the MyLinks_Custom table to the MyLinks2_Custom table because the original MyLinks used a date but the new plugin uses a timestamp. It should insert an up to date timestamp though if the date can't be converted successfully.

Also I can let you all know that links in multiple categories are handled properly =)

Thanks a lot for that. There did seem to be a problem with the date - an example in the new table for the timestamp: 1019775600 which I assume isn't correct. Anyway didn't have many custom links so that wasn't a problem.

Moving the line in the script yesterday sorted out the number of span pages for the users list - I now have the correct number of pages but the whole list is shown on every page. (Also they don't seem to be sorted by the field I selected in the options).

Re: [afinlr] MyLinks SQL In reply to
Nevermind, I've fixed all issues and uploaded the update.

The error with the spanning was caused by the fact I'd defined a table object using:

my $table = $DB->table('Users');

...then set the ordering/limits but stupidly used a new table object for the query instead of $table which had all the options set.

The sorting problem was partly related to that, but I'd also forgotten to add the user sort order to the admin panel.

Re: [afinlr] MyLinks SQL In reply to
You can do the uninstall and leave the templates and tables installed, then when you reinstall the plugin will ask if you want to overwrite templates - say no, and it will detect your tables and ask if you want to drop them, select no again.

Re: [Paul] MyLinks SQL In reply to
Unfortunately, not quite fixed. The sort order seems to be working but I now get 1 or two users per page - and the number of users has gone back up to near the total number of users instead of the number with public folders.Unsure

Having had a look through the sub, I think that the problem may be that you limit the number of users you're looking through before deciding whether they have any public folders - does that sound right? I think that may be why you weren't using $table to begin with?

I'm playing around with it - I'll let you know if I fix it.

This is a bug =( ....it's in the my_custom subroutine too.

You need to switch $IN->param and the custom user option, so for example:

Code:
my $ord = $USER->{SortField} || $IN->param('sf') || $opts->{'Sort Field'} || 'ID';
my $way = $USER->{SortOrd} || $IN->param('so') || $opts->{'Sort Order'} || 'ASC';

...would become:

Code:
my $ord = $IN->param('sf') || $USER->{SortField} || $opts->{'Sort Field'} || 'ID';
my $way = $IN->param('so') || $USER->{SortOrd} || $opts->{'Sort Order'} || 'ASC';

I would like to turn it into more of a personal review of the site - I might make it publicly viewable - not sure about this. I have changed it so that the comment can be entered into a text box but I want to stop html being added and would like to convert line breaks to <br> tags.

Hmm this is an "overlook" on my part. It will throw an error if you try to add the same link to the same folder twice. You can fix this in sub my_link_add by changing:

Code:
# Make sure the link doesn't exist in this folder.
if ($DB->table('MyLinks2')->count({ my_user_username_fk => $USER->{Username}, my_folder_id_fk => $fid, my_link_id_fk => $lid })) {

to...

Code:
# Make sure the link doesn't exist.
if ($DB->table('MyLinks2')->count({ my_user_username_fk => $USER->{Username}, my_link_id_fk => $lid })) {

...then it will make sure the link doesn't exist anywhere rather than just in the current folder.

I think what I'm going to do regarding the html is just change < to &lt; otherwise I'd have to add error checking for every field.

Yes there would be template changes. As long as you've edited your templates using the template editor then you'll have a custom copy in the "local" directory and so when you install, the new ones will go in the main template directory and then you can cut/paste the changes.

The changes are in:

my_home.html
my_public_home.html
my_users.html

I think that's all Crazy

Oh the other issue I forgot to mention is that two new column have been added to the user table so you would have to drop and re-create the tables to make that table update. Or if you don't want to do that you can add them manually using the table editor.

Col Spec:

FolderSortField, VARCHAR, 255, ^[\w\s]+$

FolderSortOrd, VARCHAR, 255, ^(?:A|DE)SC$

People wanted me to remove html from the fields incase someone entered some nasty code or just decided to go to town by formatting their folders or links =)

But, that would mean I'd have to check each field and report any errors, so the easiest thing to do it convert < to &lt; and so if anyone enters html it will just show as plain text rather than being parsed as html.

The URL '%s' is dead.

When you made your folder public were you logged in as an administrator? If so you need to add Administrator status into the plugin options "Show Status" field.

>>> I'll update all these issues asap. Hopefull by tommorrow.

No rush. I had already added some language for the one error... I just thought you would like to know.

Yes, I was logged in as am admin...

Where are the "plugin options "Show Status" field" located at?

Also, when I was in language, I see that there is a limit on the number of folders/links etc one can have (or I assume that based on some of the rror language I see there). Where do set the limits for these? Under Insralled Plug Ins, I only have an "About" link, no "set up" links or things like that. (Sorry if that is a stupid question!)

Next to the installed plugin you have:

Edit | Uninstall

If you click "Edit" you'll see loads of options that you never knew were there :)

Scroll down to the botton and you'll see the textarea when you need to enter "Administrator" - then your folder will show :)

Paul - if you are updating the plugin anyway - could you make a few things optional from the plugin settings:

1. HTML or TEXT mail
2. Check names and e-mail addresses ON/OFF
3. Recommend (allow all/registered user)

Just selfish suggestions as I need to change this every time I update the plugin... (perfectly understandable if you don't want to do it though)

Cheers

Why would you want to turn off name/email checking?

Re: [Paul] Suggestion In reply to
Bacause it caused me some problems... nothing to do with your rules - just me having some issues with certain names and addresses... so I prefer not to check at all

If you let me know which names/addresses caused problems I can alter the regexs.

Hi Paul,

Names with numbers - but the problem I have is an error page wich is a javascript that make a msg box with the error and go back to the page the user came from - and then it gets messed up and people are re-directed to the wrong page. So I have disabled checking at the moment - until I find a solution

Since when have names had numbers in Wink

With the javascript you should be able to redirect them by just using:

history.go(-1)

Smile good point Paul - our users are a bit strange... I did that - the problem is if you start on page A - click Recommend (page B) and get error you will goto page B again and when you then suceed entering the correct e-mail or name then you are suppose to be taken back to page A - but because of the error you are taken back to page B again...

Makes sense?

Hi Paul,

Don't worry this isn't a bug report Wink. Just wondering whether the final (ish) version is the one we can download now - are you planning on any more updates in the next few days?

The reason I ask is that I'm thinking about trying to change the custom links so that they are added to one of the folders instead of being completely separate - I think this will make them much more useful on my site - but I don't want to start mucking about with the code if you're still tinkering with it.

Hi,

I've been busy with other projects for the past few weeks. I'll will make some updates and release them hopefully before this weekend.

We are having a new conservatory built on the back of the house so I've also been assigned the job of keeping an eye on the builders Unimpressed

Ok I've got some time to work on this. Can people just give me a reminder of what needs doing :)

One thing I'm aware of is the user list slowness. I'll try to fix that.

Anything else?

Hi Paul,

Here are a few things:

1. Allow a user to nominate a default folder

2. Suport for moving multiple items from one folder to another

3. Include a Links::init_date(); please

4. When a user use the send a link feature - count in a table called recommended so we can rank links based on most recommended/sent

5. Option to switch off name and e-mail address and message checking (ref previous posts)

6. Allow the mail function to be used by non-registered users (so you can use it for all - send a link functionality instead of having to use two programs - like recommend_it)

That's all that I can think of right now
