Help needed
Hi all

I am in a bit of a stick here, i just bought the mail program and after having dificulty installing finally got it installed.

However i was hoping for someone to guide me through the rest as i just signed up my self as a user in which i can send email however when i try to reply i never get the email back.

Another thing is i know the basics of telnet like moving to directorys and such but not how to run cron jobs.

Another is why is there not a great manual that comes with the program that idoits could understand, (the idiot part is me)

another thing is i read in the 4 page txt file that came with the software to run maint.pl everyday however i don't have it in the batch folder so i have no idea.

and so on

Please if anyone can please take me by the hand to get this all sorted as i am starting to wish i did not buy the program and gone with the program at http://www.webbasedemail.com as they have a huge manual that explains everything about there email software and how to use it.

Just a little help would be appricated.
Thanks
Kirk James

Gossamer-Threads do installations as part of the package when you buy the license so if you weren't comfortable with it then it probably would have been best asking for their assistance.

Have you defined the path to sendmail/smtp for outgoing mail in the admin area?

Have you setup a catchall account to collect incoming email?

At the telnet prompt type crontab --help

This forum is the *manual* - if Gossamer_threads had spent all their time making the manual then that would mean less time coding and not such a great product. Im sure they will create some more docs in the near future but if not then there is this forum for posting queries.

Re: Help needed In reply to
Yes,

gunzip gmail.tar.gz

will un gzip it. Then:

tar xzvf gmail.tar

the z flag says to un gzip it, however it is already un gzipped.

Cheers,

Alex

I've never read so much bull****! The product would be just as great whether they wrote a decent manual or not. As it is, the manual is full of typos and if anything makes the whole thing look a lot less professional (this can only be a good thing for the competition).

Hmmm ok so if Alex had spent all his time making a perfect manual and less time programming you are saying that Gossamer-Mail and Links SQL would be as good?....I don't think so.

......and the manual isn't FULL of typos, there are a couple but as no-one is perfect then I don't think that is anything to complain about. Why not mention it to Alex so he can correct it rather that criticizing him??

You should be extremely grateful that Gossamer-Threads have delevloped such products in the first place and you should also be grateful of this forum which IMHO is MUCH more useful than a big manual.

No, I'm saying writing a decent manual doesn't impact on the quality of the software. It's a frigging manual for god's sake! [deleted by admin]

This is the way I see it.
If your using the program for free, you have no right to complain about the manual. If your a paying customer you get the install for free which is better than any manual I've read before. Besides, as quickly as things are progressing around here the manual would be outdated before it's published.
PS Wat u tink bout my spellun.
