Classified Ads using only DBMAN: User Friendly Files??
I was wondering if anyone is interested in having a classified ads system using DBMAN. I have received many requests for this customization. However, I was wondering if anyone is interested in having more user friendly files....similar to user friendly html.pl file that JPDeni has written...but with the added features of the Classified Ads system I am working on.

At this point, I am only willing to release the scripts AS IS...but after looking at the new codes and routines I've installed, the scripts are not that user friendly for novice programmers. If there is a large number of users who would like a cleaner and more user friendly version of the scripts I've written (with a lot assistance from Carol-JPDeni), I am willing to expend the extra time in creating them.

Let me know via email or post your interest in this thread.

BTW: I am not in the position to write routines to use templates...but I am thinking of adding in "flags" and more variables in the config file that I hope will make it easier for novice programmers to use my scripts...if they want them. Smile

Note: These scripts are not to supersede the project that TimRyan is working on in terms of connecting DBMAN with LINKS to produce a multiple user system that will use the functionality and features of LINKS to create projects, such as Classified Ads. But for those users who do not have the disk space for the overhead that comes with LINKS and would like to have the true database structure for Classified Ads, my scripts may prove to be quite helpful.

I have been working on the new version of my mountain biking site forever now (one of these days I'll get it online) and I am using a stock version of DBman with a few minor mods for a classified ad section of my site. I would really like to see and/or use your classified ads DBman on my site. I have not seen what your system does but based on all of the threads that I have seen in reference to it, I'm sure its really great. I am currently using templates in my DBman but I'm just using the include file thing which will hopefully work on your version. I look forward to seeing what your classified ad system can do.

jdulberg,

Hi there. There are still some kinks that need to be worked out. But I am almost there.

Currently the system has the following features:

1) Secure registration system for prospective employers and employees to access their appropriate databases.(Using the Secure Lookup Mod by JPDeni)

2) Four Tier Email Notification System:

a) When a registered user submits a new job or resume, an email message is sent to the administrator.

b) When the administrator validates the posting, then an email message is sent to the registered user.

c) When a record is modified, an email message is sent to the registered user and administrator.

d) When a record is deleted, an email message is sent to the registered user and administrator.

3) Registered User able to specify permissions to post email address publicly. Also, the registered user has the ability to specify a number of days that that they
want their posting to be listed.

4) Robust Search Engine for general users that includes: a) Category, b) Keywords, c) Job Type, d) State, e) Country, and g) # of hits per page.

5) Ability to Browse Categories or List All Records (either total or new).

6) Ability to send Records (postings) to friends or family members who have an email account.

7) Private Email Form for those prospective employers or employees who do not want to publicly post their email address.
The web visitor never sees the email address, but they can fill out a form to contact the employer or employees.

8) Records are sorted by recent submissions first and listed in a quick view and links to detailed records. (Using the Short and Detailed Mod by JPDeni.)

9) The database files are backed up once a week for recovery purposes. This is a stand alone script, but works well with DBMAN. It can run with either Cron for UNIX or AT Scheduler for NT.

I am also looking at ways to incorporate some other nice mods I've seen used on some other DBMAN based Classified Ads Systems, like linking to other ads posted by registered users. Like when you view a detailed post, there will be a link or button that you can view similar posts.

I still need to work out some of the bugs...but I hope to have a "working" version up and running for the general public in the next month or so.

Thanks for your input.

Regards,

Hi Eliot!

I am still interested in using your classified Ads on our site, even though I have the LINKS Classified Ads mod running.

I do not have DMan installed and being a noivce at this it might take some help in installing it and getting it running to use something like your mod.

It would be good if you did have templates but if not we will work from there.

Look forward to seeing the end result.

Thanks, Ian.

Keep in mind that TimRyan is working a wonderful project to "marry" DBMAN and LINKS in terms of offering the multiple manager interface of DBMAN with the functionality of LINKS. So, you may want to also look at his finished project and decide which one you like the best. I am not trying to compete with TimRyan's efforts.

But I do know that DBMAN has less overhead in terms of number of files and size of files than LINKS. Using my system will be ideal for those people who are concerned about disk space.

I will keep you guys posted on my progress...I am almost there.

Just for the record. Smile I agree fully with your statements as to what you are working on Eliot and what I am working on as being two entirely different projects.

I am only in the early stages and have just started getting familiar with DBMan and Links2(Templates). So, even if there where some overlap in ideas you are way ahead of me.

It is very common for me to just "dive" into a project with lots of ideas; only to find that it took months to complete.

I also, will be looking forward to seeing your classifieds when it is complete.

So I do not take up your "Thread space". You can see the difference in what I am doing and compare that with what you are doing at: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/forum/resources/Forum12/HTML/000694.html

Thanks, TimRyan. It may take some time for the "partnership" between DBMAN and LINKS to fully mature. I do know that Jerry (a.k.a widgetz) has created a multiple user interface in LINKS for a client...I don't know if he will release it or not.

Again, I appreciate your involvement and efforts, Tim. Keep up the great work.

Eliot, are you satisfied with your work on this Classifieds mod? Have you "released" it yet?

Nope...And I have stopped working on it. Due to the problems that people have with the simple Mods I have written for DBMAN, I am not motivated to release more complex Mods (or any other Mods for that matter).

BTW: Most of the stuff I have set up for a "Classified" type of project, like the Job Center and Resume Center I have working on my site utilizes existing Mods in the Resource Center and at the following URL:
