I'm going to put my foot in something here but I'll cover my back so QooQ doesn't beat me up :)

Ok here goes...

Myself and QooQ are hopefully going to get a dedicated server. It will be around the following spec:

700mhz
512MB RAM
40GB Hard Drive
40GB/month bandwidth

Now, we don't need 40GB of hard drive all for ourselves so in the name of practicality we decided it may be a good idea to take on board a third person to share the space with and to cut costs.

So basically we are looking for someone _VERY_ reliable, trustworthy etc who is looking for a dedicated server and/or who maybe can't afford their own who may want to share with me and the awesome QooQster.

Now the cover my back bit:

This is not set in stone yet. Details have to be finalized and it may not happen and the server may change and bla bla but if you are semi-interested please send me or QooQ a pm or email.

We'd be happy to talk about the deal but we (well I was ..hehe) are thinking of about 5-6GB of space and 10GB bandwidth for $70/month. Obviously this could change depending what server we go for but if there are any changes we'll let you know and you can pull out or whatever.

I think it's because IP's are becoming sparse and so you need a good reason to get them. You are right....SSL needs a seperate IP and so that would be a valid reason. I think basically you just need to prove that you aren't requesting them for the sake of it.

I agree. I asked Tim about that and he said it was because they buy the servers in bulk for cost effectiveness and so they are all the same spec in general.

Yeah. He does actually have different machines. I think he said he had 1Ghz, 700Mhz, and 233Mhz. I went with the 233Mhz as it can still handle 1500 hits second, so it will easily cope with my traffic, even with DMOZ dumps going on

I think if he even just offered the 1Ghz and 700Mhz ones it would be better, as it gives a bit more choice.

The content must always be free. And if I have to pay to download the content off your server then that is in breach of the licence agreement.

2) They are in an old bank basement, with fire supression systems installed. Not sure about backups. I was told if i wanted a backup drive I needed to buy a form of backing up. Tim gave me another HD to back mine upi on though

Ah. Backup is one of the most important when I'm deciding on these things. I'm paranoid and go for 'Archiver' that backs up the entire machine every 3 hours onto a a removable drive and another machine, so that I could hot-swap them if neccessary (via RAID Level 1 Mirroring). With a lot of our business depending on the SQL server and other applications for internal processes more than external - this has become an absolute must.

No, not at the moment. I'm hosting 7 domains at the moment on a shared machine and I don't see myself outgrowing the service offerings for a very long time. Out of 7 domains, I only use 800mb bandwidth a month, for example :-\. And each site averages 8,000 / pm.

In light of that, I think its not to bad that they don't offer a backup system. Even if you were to pay another $300 for a tape/DVD-RAM/other form of backup, you have still saved money!

My philosophy is you get what you pay for.

I'd be careful with brandnew companies...

When you have gzip, a little perl knowledge and a cable modem then backing up is fairly simple.

Just run a perl script using cron to gzip all the sites and then transport them to my local server (on my home pc) using Net::FTP or whatever.

Not a robust solution but a good backup.

But they aren't cheap. The prices are just a bit less than rackspace.com.

I didn't mean Tier1host to be a cheapy, it is just strange they do not even ask for a setup fee (which is obviously a webhosting standard for dedicated servers). Just wondered how they bring home their bacon.

Oh yeah, no setup fee is a bit weird but I ain't complaining (unless they go bankrupt lol)

Another thing I try to do is to actually go and visit the data house - go and see the server for yourself. Make sure that what they call "fireproof" and a rack server is actually that. I've always been somewhat sceptical of these companies that claim that their data center and their connections are supa-amazing.

One of the things I like about http://www.pair.net is that they have images of their data center so if you can't visit, you can get a good feel of where your server will be housed. Always a bonus I think.

I wanted to wish you well on your dedicated adventure.

I configured a server at rackspace and contacted my host. Tier1Host is about $70 a month less than either and doesn't charge a setup fee. Depending on the term of your contract and if you prepay or not, Tier1Host could save you $800-1200+ per year.

I guess the gist of several of these posts have been to make sure you know what you are purchasing. For example, my wife has been looking at cellular phones lately. Verizon offers service in our area and the map legend on the brochure calls it the Verizon "Digital Neighborhood". Digital Neighborhood is a service mark and in the service area I live in the "Digital Neighborhood" is analog service.

I did a Google groups search and found 2 non-relavant messages. Google web search found 106, 30 considered unique. webhostingtalk.com has no threads containing tier1host.

We are actually getting a 1000mhz athlon now and Tier1 have paid for the processor to be delivered by 3 day air so that was nice of them :)

I had a long chat with the co-founder of Tier1 last night and he is pretty genuine. He used to develop helpdesk applications for fortune 500 companies and has been a perl programmer for 10 years.

I asked why he can do such cheap deals and he says that he makes nothing on hardware and makes all his profit on bandwidth. This is true from what I've seen as at rackspace adding a little ram or extra cpu to your configuration adds a lot of $$ onto the final price.

We have a 30 day money back guarantee though which is useful.

That doesn't mean much in my opinion. Just because a company isn't well known doesn't mean they are dodgy or untrustworthy. You can often get better deals with smaller companies (and better customer support).

So what are the bandwidth charges? Do you get a set amount free per month or do you have to pay for every little GIG you use?
