The current versions do not let users to change their usernames, a feature that was planned earlier and could be helpful to many users.
Ofcourse, having usernames as email addresses is currently possible but is not logical to use. In the forum, it will show the real email address as the poster. Similar problems would be also in the gmail.
Also there is no reason why one should have usernames as email address, as there is a field of real email address. So one may not import it at all. So the only option remaining is to create a random eight character Usernames that a user could change it at a later date.
Moreover, I am of the beleif, that if there is an option in the community to use a field for the login based on the config.pm. I mean the admin could choose if the login should be Username of an email address. If the password or the username is lost, there is a password challenge question. The same is for the email address.
Hence, it should not effect the login.
