Setting up .htaccess protection

Setting up .htaccess protection
Did a search but could not find help.

I set up an .htaccess file under cgi-bin/links/admin

"AuthUserFile /home/virtual/site5/fst/var/www/cgi-bin/links/admin/.htpasswd

AuthGroupFile /dev/null

AuthName "Private area"

AuthType Basic

require valid-user

satisfy any"

But, when I go to my admin area, I'm not prompted for a password (good thing since I don't know where I enter one) and it says I'm not protected.

I tried using one of the scripts recommended in a thread but it would not work, my browser just kept trying to download the cgi file

Can someone (a) tell me how to set up the password and (b) where to upload the .htaccess file, and (c) if that's correct.

I use the one above on paysites with no problem

Try my Ace Password script. Just upload to your admin folder, and run from your browser.

Did, would not run, kept opening the cgi script and I could not figure out what path was incorrect, so I gave up and decided a simple .htaccess file would be easier.

But, it's not working

I'll try your script again and then come back crying when I need help, ok?

:)

Unfortunately, every link in the script that says 'click here for help' ends up on a 404 page.

But, you're saying upload it to the admin folder, then set it 777? It's 755 per the directions for the link script. Your directions say nothing about uploading it to the admin directory at all ...

I tried to reply to this earlier, but it wouldn't post...? Anyway, I have attached a zip for the whole acepassword script.

Andy, the one you posted is the new php version, isn't it? I linked the old one, hope you don't mind...
