Server OS what to choose...

Server OS what to choose...
well I tried setting up links on a nt server but no luck;-(
So now I'm gonna set up a old PC with some OS, the question is which shall it be??
Any preferences??
I need apache, cgi, virtual host (part of apache), ftp, subdomains, nameserver for the domains hosted etc.
also the system should not be to heavy since the hardware is gonna be some old stuff...

I was thinking about some unix system like openbsd or freebsd, but also some linux system sounds good, but is there any easy to install/ set up server system out there, I like them to be free, but if it's an killer system I'm willing to buy....

Please post your advice, and sorry for posting this here, I know it's kinda off-topic...

Peter

You won't go far wrong with Linux. I prefer SuSE, but it doesn't matter really. You have to edit a text file (httpd.conf) to set up Apache, although I think there's GUI frontend available. Most if not all Linux distros have everything you need already included.

SuSE costs no more than £25 and installs very easily with YaST2. I don't know about the others. RedHat seems to be the favourite with hosting companies.

yeah, I looked further into it and redhat seems to be the one..

I forgot to tell that I needed remote administration, and from what I've read redhat supports this...

as for the virtual host i've looked at how to configure it so I know all about this;-)

Only problems is how I get the nameservers up and running and connected to the web...

Is there any pages with tutorials for setting up a server, I don't seem to be able to find any good ones:(

thx, for the advice, in the end I think I'll go with the download of the iso image of redhat, unless any of you convince me to do otherwise....( I'm kinda short on money(student) and I have access to 2mbit, so download isn't a problem)

You probably need to read the DNS-HOWTO and possibly the chroot-BIND-HOWTO. Also, try the Networking-Overview-HOWTO and the Net-HOWTO. These should be listed on the RedHat site or on the LDP site: http://www.linuxdoc.org/. Smile
