403 when Moving to a new server--SOLVED :)
It seems that 403 errors are pretty common and pretty frustrating when installing Links 2.0 I know I was frustrated.

I moved my Links 2.0 from one host to another.

I got my other cgi scripts running but every time I tried to get Links 2.0 running I got a 403 error when I tried to access my http://domain.com/...inks/admin/admin.cgi file

I checked this forum and made absolutely sure that my /pages directory was NOT in my cgi-bin 'cause if it is you'll get 403 errors all the time.

For new folks, that is the directory that had two files when you download Links 2.0 (background.gif and links.css)

Do NOT put this directory in your cgi-bin!!! It MUST be in your root directory. I have seen this thread soooo much and yet most of you looking to solve your 403 error are putting it in you cgi-bin....DON'T!!!Wink

================================

Since my 403 problem was a permissions problem I checked this thread:

http://gossamer-threads.com/...mp;ubb=000730:Forum2

This is a list of chmod permissions for EACH file and directory. Once again Bobsie comes through with great help. Thank you.

If you are installing Links 2.0 go to this thread print it out and in your WS-FTP (or whatever you use) go line by line through this. It will save you lots of time and lots of aggrivation.

Anyway, I remembered I had used the "Password Protect" modification

http://www.gossamer-threads.com/...fications/index.html

http://www.i01.de/webmaste3.htm

In WS-FTP you can't see the .htaccess file in Mydomain.com/cgi-bin/links/admin so I had forgotten all about it.Unsure

Of course, since I was moving to a new server my "full path" had changed. I put in the new path uploaded it and it worked.

====================================

All of this is just to help out since I have been searching for solutions to 403 errors.

I know that most of you having 403 error problems are not having the same problem that I did but MOST of the folks that I saw in this forum with 403 errors were either one of two problems.

1) By far the most common--the html pages directory INSIDE the cgi-bin

2) Incorrect permissions

Those are fixable if you know what to look for.

Good luck as you battle the 403 DeamonMad
