Linux or NT?
I am planning on moving my site to a Web Hosting service. I am curious which system would be most efficient, and effective Linux or NT ?

Thanks ..

If you want the least hassle and best protection, I would choose Linux myself. NT doesn't handle file permissions like Linux, and is hard to password protect directories. Some people love NT though.

Hi

I agree with Bobsie

I've a few NT intalls of Links and it's always a real pain and seems to take three times as long as for a Linux install - with Linux one can usually sort stuff out ones self, but with NT it usually involves several phone calls NT sys admins who never seem to understand permissions and ownerships (ISS and NT ones)...

If you are not able to site at the kyboard 39 hours a day, go with Linux or any flavor of Unix over NT.

Unix is designed for remote admin, and there is almost nothing you can't do by telnet that you can do at the keyboard.

Choice of a webhosting company should be made on service and support. Do they offer what you need, are their prices for it reasonable, and will they help you (or allow you) to do what you need to operate your site.

NT always seems to have a list of work-arounds, just take a look at scripts other than Links, you'll usually see special footnotes for NT installs. I'd go Linux.

Linux is very good at hosting web sites especially with a good web server installed (like Apache). I own a web hosting company and that is exactly what I use. A great combination.

If you are going with NT, one of the better web servers is Internet Information Server (IIS). It is easier to administrate than O'Reilly's Web Server. So, make sure that you ask the hosting company, which web server package they offer on the NT.

Several of the sites I visit use NT. And I can tell, since they give all sorts of errors on connection, too many users, and other problems all the time.

Realize, if you go with M$, you are under their basic "control the world" maxim, and they put limits on everything they allow you to do. Remember the famous "640k is all anyone will ever need" statement.

Also, look at what they just did to Java... tryint to control that "open" technology as well. "Write once, use forever" is just not in M$'s way of thinking. "Write forever, never use" is more like it.
