Search multiple copies of links

Search multiple copies of links
I'm not sure if this has already been covered, I couldn't find anything by searching the forum ...

I am working towards having several topic specific directories (all running their own copy of Links V2) and wondered if it would be possible to search them all at once?

I would like to create a 'hub' to show people the various directories, and offer them a search facility from the hub that will query each site and return maybe the top 10 matches, thus:

Results from Directory Name:

$Results 1-10

----- Horizontal Rule -----

Results from Next Directory Name:

$Results 1-10

----- Horizontal Rule -----

Results from Third Directory Name:

$Results 1-10

etc ...

Now I realise that would probably need a separate search script with the individual locations to all the site names, links.db, url.db, categories.db, etc. but would it be possible?

Thanks for any replies.

All the best
Shaun

Point of clarification...The search script in LINKS only searches LINKS.DB. It does not search url.db or categories.db.

To what you want to do would be quite intensive on server resources in terms of opening multiple files and printing data from multiple files in one script.

Just wanted to give you a heads-up!

Eliot,

Quite right if you're just searching one links directory, but I want to search several different ones, e.g.;

Qango.com
Qango Auto World
Qango Revenue Street
etc.

I assumed you would need to reference the different categories.db files for each one in the search results (as they all have different cats and subcats) and that jump.cgi would need to know which links.db file the ID=xx is coming from (as the links will be from multiple databases), therefore the different url.db file references also.

I thought it would be challenging - but maybe its just too big an idea? Smile

Learn about Perl and grep and you may find a solution on your own.

Gian,

I gave up on the idea - it just sounded like too much work and I don't have the time right now to experiment with it Smile

... and its Qango - no 'u' in it Smile
