Hi there.
Yesterday i tried out something that some of you may be interested in. Om my templates i replaced the "rate it" section with "similar sites" when a user clicks on this link basicaly is sends a search query using the description. sometimes it only returns the site that was queried but sometimes it does return one or two other sites that are fairly similar. has anyone ever tried this or better still does anyone know of a better way of implimenting this.

I don't believe this "exact" MOD has been done before...although variations of this MOD, like Similar web pages for domain addresses has been done before, but not Similar web pages across different domain addresses.

May be an idea to remove common words (like and or etc) from the description before doing the search.

if common words are removed the results are a lot better. as most of you will know from my posts i am no expert with this sort of thing so it may take a while to write the mod propperly but i will post it here as soon as it is working properly. i tried using string queries for titles of sites in my database and removed the common words like "and,or and A" and it was quite surprizing how close the relevalte pages where. The big graw back was the size of my database is fairly small (just under 2000) so you need to use sites from popular categories in order to get many similar sites.
Another mothod i tried that does work and involves no perl mods is to use url psider pro to spider your links.db and create a seperate database spider.db and have a link from the "rate it" page leading to a search string to search spider.db with a link like "more from this site" the bigest problem with this mod is that you have to convert links.db to html format and have all the url's active and upload the file to your server. set url spider pro loose on this oage and let it follow all links. it will index then amd follow all links from it and so on. this could also be used to parse a backup search for when links finds no results.
