Multiple Editors ...

Multiple Editors ...
Dear Readers,

I am running a webresource directory and finding it a very slow process to expand and add links. Thats why i want to be abled to let other people run a specific category that they will add links to which will dramatically increase links enlargement.

I know this is probably a widgetxz job and its not as easy as it probably sounds.
Using this method would also require limited access, i wouldnt want to give an "editor" full access to edit templates, newsletter, build, etc...

I hope this is something achievable.

Thankyou alll

John

Hi siteresources!

I think this has been asked before. I am not sure what the outcome was.

What you are looking for is like multiple admin access with you placing restrictions on what they can do etc.

Do a search and see what comes up.

Thanks Ian

I did a search on "editor" i didnt get what i was looking for, and yes i would like to provide restricted admin access to the editors.
I guess this is a widgetz job!

Hi Siteresources:

Nice Looking site by the way...

I remembered the editor topic coming up a while ago and it came to mind that widgetz had recomended using 'dbman' on the front end, so I did a search using that as a keyword and came up with this thread..

www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/forum/resources/Forum3/HTML/001351.html

Seems there isn't a mod yet---at least not to the public.

Actually, the mod made with Dbman to use it with links came out a while ago.

www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/forum/resources/Forum12/HTML/000881.html - this should help, and give links to other posts. I never installed this because I don't think it looks like the one i want to use. i'd be more into Widgetz one that he had on his admin before and maybe still does.
Heres the search url i used
www.gossamer-threads.com/perl/search.cgi?query=front+end&bool=and&substring=1&forum=12&date=&author=&search=Perform+Search

Hi John!

Yes there was one released using DBman in conjunction with Links but some of us have chosen not to use it.

I run Ultraboard on my site which has the ability to set up moderators and their security from the one admin section and I think thats what a lot of us would like to see in a links version.

Bxmer has provided the links to the forums and you do have a nice site Smile

there are over 300 modifications.. mostly in db.pl and admin_html.pl

if you compare that to any other modification's instructions.. there is no minimal..

Yeah, if you distribute your copy, we can add all other mods into yours. Because adding every mod i have in mine, though alot, wouldn't be as much as that.

Maybe you should make minimal instructions or something, like telling us or people who know perl where stuff goes and thats it. Then whoever gets it can tell how, and you could let us post instructions. You don't use it anymore? Do you still have the files with it? It would suck if you trashed it

yeah it would be great if you could release that with minimal instructions - i am sure we will figure it out.
It is exactly what i have been looking for.

Thanks

yep.. i did make one.. however i don't use it anymore as Links SQL comes with it..

i was going to release it.. but seriously.. it'd take more time making instructions then it took to make it..

also.. originally the guys i made it for told me not to give it away to anyone else.. but legally i owned the script so i gave it away to SOME people..

the main things were that you could add different level administrators all capable of logging into the same admin as you.. however.. the functions are all different.. the main administrator is capable of doing anything.. the editor is capable of updating things only in the category(s) assigned by the administrator.. and their was a messaging system as well.. but i don't think you guys had the chance to see that..

the last level admin really wasn't an admin.. just a user.. the users were able to edit their things.. like their links and stuff.. (of course this made me rename the admin folder to just users..)

links sql already has this.. except for the user thing.. but i JUST made the user thing a second ago for someone.. that will be released sometime soon..

ok , if widgetz is not abled to make this mod available maybe there is a possible way arround it ?

What if i created a single html file obviously mirroring the admin page although i would eliminate the links that i did not want the editors to have access to, i could put this file in a new direcotry and password protect it.

Can anyone see any problems with this before i go ahead with it ?

-> oops, i have just thought of one . This would not make it possible for the "editor" to run one single category would it Frown" poop.

Please post your ideas,

regards,
John

I'm new here, so excuse me for butting in. I'm afraid I don't have a solution to the problem, I just wanted to add another voice asking widgetz to make the files available. I have a site that would be perfect for use with Links ( http://home.hiwaay.net/~lkseitz/cvg/nexus/ ).

Unfortunately I'm already using my own custom script to run the site. (I was not aware of any scripts like Links when I wrote it. It appears I wrote my script about the same time Links 2.0 was written.) My script is incredibly kludgy, but it works and supports separate editors for each category. Unfortunately, I'm about to run into a problem regarding editors and I'm tired of kludging my script instead of running the site.

I would like to convert my site to Links. The only thing stopping me (aside from having to write a script to convert all my data over), is the lack of support for multiple admins with restricted rights.
