Is there a way to add a hyperlink for each link in your directory to the modify.cgi program so that it already knows the link to be modified and the visitor does not neeed to add the url of the link (which they may not remember)

thanks :-)

In terms of adding a link to each record, you could use the following codes:

Code:
<a href="<%db_cgi_url%>/modify.cgi">Modify Link</a>

In terms of adding additional codes to the modify.cgi that will put the URL into the modify form...that is something I don't know how to do...but would like to see a mod for it.

My initial thinking is that it would be set-up like the jump.cgi file that would be able to input the URL associated with the ID in the Modify Form.

May be someone knows how to do this...possibly Jerry, since he is the LINKS Whiz! Smile

Thanks.

I would have thought there is a way to do it like the rate.cgi thing:

http://www.freeontheweb.com/cgi-bin/links/rate.cgi?ID=115

sort of thing but have rate as modify. That is what would be ideal :-)

Not being the perl wiz but i would have thought that the variable in the ID=124 bit can be transferred on to modify.cgi and there turned back into what the form would have used?

anyone got ideas?

Bmxer, the point is that other people can modify links even if it was not them that added it :-)

No, it would not matter if they added the link or not.

The nature of my site means that it is often not the people who run the website who add the link but others... and anybody can modify it if term of the site change... of course i can stop the modification at admin right?

thanks...

i guess that means it should be possible?

Not real secure but a better thing to do would be to make this leave out the email address because if you don't know your email address then you shouldn't be on that site. But i like the old ways myself.

Let me ask you, how would you prevent people from modifying a link if they were not the person that originally added the link? Or wouldn't it matter? I ask because I might be able to help with this based on the answer.

what kind of databases would use this? I mean what kind do you think padders? I can see maybe like an open source directory using links like dmoz, except without category moderators just everyday people. I think the password thing is good, but i'm not making it so Smile

Re: Modify link In reply to
i am now a little confused:

if any link that is to be modified has to be approved by you in admin.cgi then what is the problem with having anyone attempt to modify the link. The url may have changed etc.... if someone adds there link to your site and then gives up on it they are unlikely to come back to your site and ask you to move it :-)

any ideas then bobsie?

padders,

You have no way of knowing whether or not the person modifying the link is the one who submitted the link. Perhaps the person who originally submitted WANTS to be the only one that changes it and doesn't want other people messing with it.

Perhaps, as you say, the person who submitted it has given up on it. If that is the case, then the public will not be going there much (it will have very low hits) or they will rate it low, etc.

As to your original post, let me work on that and I'll get back to you... I just cannot guarantee how long it will take. It is certainly possible to do, but it really isn't something that should be done, IMHO.

I can understand the problems bobsie but believe the advantage, in my case, will outweigh the problems.

If you do get anywhere do tell me but there is no rush :-)

Thanks for all the help.

Bobsie, not pressuring you..... :-) but have you got any further on this idea.....

I know that you do not like it really but it is useful for me especially if a site changes what it offers, so the description changes or even the url.

Thanks bobsie

Padders,

I haven't had any time to do anything with it. First, I was out of town for a little over a week. Then, the night I got back, I ended up in the hospital and am just now "recuperated" from that. I am so backlogged down is beginning to look like up!

I'll take a look at this as soon as I can.
