Has anybody modified links so it can be used as a classified ad program? I'm curious about using links to do this... Any suggestions/info?

1) Check out the Sites in Action section of the Resource Center.

2) Search the forums and Resource Center for classifieds.

Yes....it has been done and there used to be a "Classified Ads" Mod in the Resource Center, which basically comprised MANY of the modifications available both in the Links 2.0 Forums and in the Resource Center.

As I mentioned there used to be a Mod available for Classifieds...but it is no longer available.

there used to be 2 classifieds mods and i downloaded both of them and did not like any of them so if they are not there anymore, i do not think you are missing much.
i been looking for a reliable classifieds script on the net for at least ayear without any luck.
maybe alex will make one some day

Using the MODS for Links 2.0, you can make the script do almost anything you want!

For example, if you use the following Modifications:

1) TellaFriend - To refer classified ads
2) Add new fields (not really a mod) - To add additional fields for classifieds
3) Expirator Mod - To expire ads based on date provided by classified owners.
4) Shopping Cart Mod - To add order processing.

etc., etc., etc....

Links is a really flexible program that you can adapt it for most if not all of your web site needs.

I think dbman is more suitable for this job.

I disagree...in terms of organizing classifieds into categories/subcategories, you have to modify DBMAN a lot to get it to work properly. In addition, there are many more built-in features of Links 2.0 that are appropriate for Classified Ads.
