An ambitious project, kudos for pulling it off.

If you ever see fit to post the bookmark.pl file PLEASE DO! Smile

I've got a bookmark set of about 200 links that I want to add to a database (yep, they have descriptions) - and would love to get a copy of it.

There's no .shtml needed as I added a line to the .htaccess file.

Cool. How does that work? I need to do that for UBB.

Add this line to your .htaccess file in your root web directory:

AddType text/x-server-parsed-html .html

NOTE: The script I used is not Xavatoria II, it's actually "The Fluid Dynamics Search Engine", available at http://www.xav.com/latest/search.txt
[I edited this in... I decided not to change the rest]
After reading all of this about adding spiders to Links, I decided to try it out. I got Xavatoria II and tried it out on my own... for some reason it has trouble grabbing pages on my site but otherwise it's bug free.
So anyway, I modified site_html.pl to execute the Xavatoria II when a normal search returns no hits, and to link to it when the user is on the last page of their results.
To make Xavatoria work inside of site_html.pl, I deleted many of the header and footer tags. This makes it transparent to the user that they are actually using another script. For people who want to try this, make sure you change the HTML for the Xavatoria script when it tries to link to the next search results page. You must put the address of a second Xavatoria search script, as it is set up to link to whatever script that the user used to get their first results (which for most cases is search.cgi). If you do not, Xavatoria will try give search.cgi a few weird parameters so that it will pull the next 10 hits, but search.cgi will not understand this.
In the second Xavatoria script, change the HTML header and footer to look just like Links. If the settings are the same as the first one, your visitors will never know that Xavatoria isn't part of Links.
This is not as hard as it looks, e-mail me if you want more details.

I am so stupid in perl, especially in configuring search.pl script of xav.

I am quite interested in this script and wanna to add it as a new search feature of my homepage. I have tried my best to set it up but still get 505 error when i use it.
Can anybody kind enough to tell me that what varialbes i need to set to get it work.

I set the $DataFilesDir as /home/yayawoo/public_html/cgi-bin/xav/data/
where my home dir is /home/yayawoo/public_html/

How to set the below variable:

$IndexFile{'Perl Documents'} = 'perldocs.txt';
$BaseDir{'Perl Documents'} = 'c:/perl/docs';
$BaseURL{'Perl Documents'} = 'http://localhost/perldocs';

# Some Realms scan the filesystem with every request, instead of building an
# index file (this is less efficient, but it's always up-to-date.) These
# Realms are declared using the special word 'RUNTIME' in place of an index
# file:

$IndexFile{'TempFiles for Today'} = 'RUNTIME';
$BaseDir{'TempFiles for Today'} = 'c:/temp';
$BaseURL{'TempFiles for Today'} = 'http://localhost/temp';

any other variables i need to set?

How Do You Eliminate the word NEW, POP on the main page and also

HOW DO YOU CREATE Subcategory and Subcategory??? Because Links 1.1 can only create Main Categories and then click on them you ll just see links of web sites...

YouHo.com is great!

mine is at

http://www.trisoft.net/cgi-bin/search/

Just Tesing! Not Readdy Yet!
I found V 2.0 is too much trouble w/ the templates and Site_html_Templates.pl FILES!

Please show me how to Create Subcategory and tell me more about mSQL I dont really know about SQL... Is it easy to witch to and remain all the links????

Thanks for the Tips!

Great site Funkmaster HUGE, earlier in the thread you said you used excel to add sites/catagories. I have excel but I've never used it before, if I want to add around 2 thousand sites would it be quicker to add them with excel than adding then by hand in the links.db file and how would I do it? Thanks

I wish I hadn't read this thread before. Funkmaster has really put up a good show Smile

I maintain a community website at http://www.ahmedabad.com and I have implemented a Search Engine from http://www.htdig.org which is a open source code. I shall recommend all of you to have a look at the search engine I have put up and you shall agree that its the FASTEST among all the products discussed above.

Secondly, http://www.khoj.com is one thing I was looking forward to implement and I landed up at this wonderfull site. If you see this website they have something like "Links" (I am not sure) along with htdig search engine working as Altavista. So, they are pretty successfull in implementing a scalable search directory/engine. If the directory results finish at lets say 5 matches it continues with the results of HTDIG. Thats the best part of it. So, the browser will always get something related to its search keyword.

Now, can I request Funkmaster HUGE to give me some idea to implement the Category search which I like it very much and I am unable to figure it out.

Thanks
Sam

Oh! I just forgot to give one more tip on an Excilent Search Engine product (which definately comes for a price) at
Alkaline's web site

http://www.vestris.com/alkaline

This is the most scalable Search Algorithum I have ever come across. They claim that you can make a search engine as big as Altavista but definately with that kind of Hardware in place. I shall like to have all of your comments on this.

I have few Questions.

1. Can Links 2.0 work without SQL engine on the webserver. And if yes,

2. How I am suppose to upgrade Links 2.0 work with mSQL if I am intalling it for the first time.

Thanks
Sam
