I would like to install the comments mod (http://cgi-resource.co.uk/pages/comment4l.html) on my detailed pages and be able to validate the comments when they are submitted.

Is this possible?

Putting it on the detailed page is easy enough, but having an easy way to validate is much more complicated. Have you looked into Comments4 ($)?
