LinksSQL Question

LinksSQL Question
Hi,
I am planing to buy LinksSQL in within the next few months if everything goes well. I have one question, would it be ok to more than one copy running on the same server.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: LinksSQL Question In reply to
Nope...you would have to purchase additional licenses.

For official information, contact Gossamer Threads directly via their contact form.

Re: LinksSQL Question In reply to
Actually, the license states for "one domain". If multiple copies are running under a single domain this should not require additional licenses.

So you could have......

http://links.domain.com
http://sql.domain.com
http://dmoz.domain.com
http://mysql.domain.com

for example............correct ??

With a copy for each subdomain?

That's how I read it, Paul. Obviously this is a grey area. Probably should get clarification from the boys though.

QUOTE>>>

This license covers one installation of the program on one domain/url only.

<<QUOTE

Therefore multiple copies on one domain require no extra licences.

can be read two ways. 'One domain OR one URL' or 'only one url under one domain'.

http://links.domain.com
http://sql.domain.com
http://dmoz.domain.com
http://mysql.domain.com

even though under one domain, are all different URL's. The guys at Gossamer seem fairly laid back to me and probably wouldn't mind but I would check with them first anyway. It's not worth making the assumption and being wrong.

Re: LinksSQL Question In reply to
Possibly...but if it can be interpreted in two ways then it wouldn't stand up in court if it ever got there.

Re: LinksSQL Question In reply to
domain/url would normally mean "domain or url"....if they meant differently they would have written.."only allowed on one url per domain".

Hey, look... If you want to be confrontational with GT, that's your prerogative. Do you really want to get into a pissing contest with the author of the software you rely so heavily on? I prefer to BUILD bridges, not burn them.

'nuff said.

I rely on so heavily?....right ...ok ...so you know that for sure?

Yeah I have often thought how my life would come to an end without LinksSQL.

I am not being confrontational.......you started the topic of the license and I merely said that whether someone took it to mean one thing or the other it wouldn't matter because it can be interpreted either way.

It affects me in no way because Im not installing it many times on one domain.

Re: LinksSQL Question In reply to
Paul,

The interpretation of domain commonly assumes that:

www.domain.tld and domain.tld are functionally the same.

othername.domain.tld is a separate domain from domain.tld.

While othername.domain.tld is a subdomain of domain.tld, it's
still a separate domain, often with it's own rules.

By your logic, domain.tld is part of the .tld domain, so just
about anyone could use it anywhere.

As far as licensing goes, the program allows one installation of the code,
and is not licensed for resale, subdomaining etc.

Common sense. The courts have to look at intent, and if the intent
of an individual is to defraud the intellectual property owner by
some sort of trickery, the 'intent' swings in favor of the owner.

A contest that nobody wins.

Re: LinksSQL Question In reply to
Exactly...I totally agree.

I don't see why everyone is lining up to "have a go"...I DO NOT wish to install multiple copies and I AM NOT trying to defraud anyone.

This has nothing to do with me....I am not the one who was asking the question....I was trying to provide the answer as I interpreted it.

I won't bother in furture if this is the response I get.

Not quite sure what this means........

Re: LinksSQL Question In reply to
Hi,

The software, like most software, is good for one installation. You can not run two copies of the software with only one license, much like you can't install 2 copies of Microsoft Word when you only bought one copy.

Also, we restrict it to one domain/url so that an ISP can not install one copy, edit the code so it works off multiple domains and give it for free to all their clients (which, yes, has happened in the past).

I hope this clears it up, if not, please start a new thread as I'm closing this one.

Cheers,

Alex
