how can I display number of galleries in subdir?

I want to display in subdir in HOME: number of the sites and "NEW" inscription when there are new sites added - something like:

Medicine (45)
Operations (50)

So when you add a site, and build you get info in your site that you have 10 Categories and in every cat you have (50) Sites and There are "NEW" added today,
So my question is how can I put also this info with numbers of sites added and that in this cat there are NEW sites.

If I understand you corrently, you want to display some subcategories on Home page, having the NEW sign, and link number after them.
This would be possible using a global.
