Can Links SQL do this?
I know Links SQL allows searching within one specific category; Is there a way to search in several specific categories but not the whole directory?

Yes, if you provide the category id input into the search form, for example in a dropdown menu...

The result URL should look then like this:
http://gossamer-threads.com/...h=25&catid=10351

This link filters the results, so you have only the Education category hits listed.
