1) Is there a way to have a number showing how many subcategories are in a category?

2) I am allow only 1 MySQL database and am using it for Links SQL. Is there a way to use the same database for Gossamer Forum or do I need a totally new database?

That's what prefixes are used for With different prefixes, you can have multiple Links SQL installs using one database, and also different products (Gossamer Forum, Gossamer Mail, etc) using the same database.
