is there any way to exclude categories from being displayed and also prevent users from adding links to these categories

What I did is adding a field to te category table (IsHidden: Yes/No)
Then in category.html

<%If IsHidden=Yes%>
<%else%>your regular template<%endif%>

The only problem with that though, is that it doesn't exclude it from the category search results, or being built (the pages will still exist, they just won't be linked). Its a bit of a horrible one to do really :(

I see your point..
I really use it to mask some categories from being visible but they can still be searched and indexed..
