Many of the users of my forum have entered

www.domain.com

iin the user_homepage field, where they of course should have entered

http://www.domain.com

I have fixed this by adding http:// in the beginning of user_homepage in case it isn't there.

Could you do something similar in a future release?

I noticed that the user homepage will now says http:// when it used to be empty, i.e. http:// will be appended in front of user_homepage, even if user_homepage is empty....

Yep. It would be nice to have some sort of check to see if the database field is blank or null/default not to show http:// in the user profile. Looks a bit silly, really. :-)
