well this is a strange question indeed and it probably doesn't even belong here, but since i was hanging in here anyway i thought i would throw it out here. when i have been editing html.pl in notepad, it has been telling me that i am out of available memory and it can't perform the function when i try to paste a block of text in there. it only happens with this file. i have over 11 gigs of available memory on my system, so it isn't that. i was thinking that the file may just have got too large for notepad, but the error message doesn't say that...it says out of available memory, close some apps and try again. has anyone else ever experienced this?

Yes...Use WORDPAD! Notepad has a certain size that it can handle on its clipboard. I use Wordpad to edit all my cgi and perl files.

thanks eliot! yes that is exactly what i have been doing. i have never experienced that before in notepad though! i knew it had a limit on the size, but i guess i just figured it was always going to be bigger than what i needed. thanx for the reply!
