i'd like to enable SOME special characters like [ ] in some fields (e.g. name) is there an EASY way to do so?

Ah. Not in database fields but in the username.

No, you can't allow other characters in the username. The reason is that, when someone logs in, a file is created in the auth directory, the name of which includes the username. There are limitations to the characters that can be used in file names.
