Windows XP Icon

Windows XP Icon
Recently I upgraded from Windows ME to XP on PC platform. What a labour intensive and expensive nightmare that was as I had to reinstall and upgrade dozens of applications. Otherwise, a-okay. But between then and now, my Start Menu [Control Panel] icon appears corrupted. Was okay after the upgrade. Wondering if maybe corrupt DLL file somewhere. However, the same icon appears okay elsewhere. Not a biggie, but it would nice to fix. Any ideas?

Hmm not sure - never seen this before.

You can probably use a "tweak" style app to change the start menu icon.

I guess that's a step in the right direction from "install linux"

Going from a DOS based OS (ME) to an NT based OS (XP), it's going to be better to backup your files, then install XP and your apps from scratch rather then trying to upgrade, IMO.

These weird things always seem to happen to me. Thar's an idea, matey! Or maybe stop being anal rententive, and live with it - especially when no other problems evident. But then I love a challenge and hate to be defeated by some ones and zeroes. Gotta do it. Thanks for the suggestion Smile

I agree, and thanks! I kinda did it ass backwards as I discovered later. However, a number of applications were incompatible under XP (this I knew in advance from preassessment) - with some dating back to Windows 95. But better off in the long run as I upgraded some applications that desperately required updating. Sooner or later, some serious upgrading was required. No data files were lost fortunately. Love XP. So many cool features - one of my favourites is the ability to copy and paste hidden passwords (******). I thought about converting from FAT32 to NTFS to take advantage of securing folders, but not until I discovered that it may cause problems with some existing applications, and the conversion is not reversible unless I reformat the drive or partition.

Yeah I skipped NTFS too and went with FAT32.

I love XP.

NTFS is supposed to be quite a bit faster than FAT32, and if your system crashes you don't have to go through the annoying "Windows now has to check your disk" business with NTFS.

Crashes not really a problem. Under ME, I had up to 6+ (mostly "blue screen of death") crashes a day - unlike Windows 95 which although not as reliable as XP, much more crash-free than ME. Under XP, maybe one or two (minor) crashes a week or so. Could definitely run faster (P4-1.5GHz), but I've thought about notching up the RAM - currently at 256Mb, and I was considering boosting to 512Mb or 1Gb. Anyone wanna buy some slightly used RAM chips? Trade-in =)

ME should never have been released in the first place as far as I am concerned :-)

I agree. I don't recall much in improvement over Windows 95, and very unstable. It got so bad I had to upgrade before I flinged the computer out the window - Windows Me meet Window Mine Wink

I think I recall having my personal reboot peak with ME - had it installed a week and removed it.. but XP is a lot more stable - not perfect - but nothing is I guess

NTFS is a far better option than FAT32 if you can afford to make the switch. With the next version of Windows there will be another filesystem again that will be completly incompatible with FAT32-only applications.
