I've gone ahead and ordered myself an ADSL connection for home. I've gone for the basic package which just installs your phone socket and gives you a few leads. Now I need to look into buying an ADSL modem for my computer. Has anyone got any reccemendations?

Normally the company your ordered ADSL from should recommend a modem.

hmmm I rent my modem since buying one costs around $300.
so $5 a month will last me until killer ADSL modems come out or the next best line is available.

Well the option I went for was just the basic kit so that they expect the user to install the modem.

Originally, I wanted a router and stick a linux box in there so i could give net access to my desktop and my laptop but that's not going to happen anymore until I buy a new laptop with wireless capabilities. My laptop at the moment is not really worth changing my setup for.

Update: Schooks. I forgot that I need to buy a few microfilters too :-(

hmmm ok maybe it's not megs but ADSL in Japan is at 1.5m and 8m with fiber at 10m

Assuming fiber is proably megs so I converted m to megs ... could be way wrong though.

ADSL right now for me is like $30 a month.

fiber is at about $50 but ... can't get it in my building

I am thinking of hosting my own site guys.

I currently use a cable company for connectivity, which seems fast enough to do the job (i dont want to pay for a T1 just yet!). The problem is, the way I understand it, my IP is not static, and therefore I cannot have my own name resolve to my compter, so I cannot do this?

Would an ADSL connection instead of cable solve this?

Actually - it probably ain't much longer than that. It then connected up to a microdish transmitter which relays the signal up to a reciever a few hundred miles away .... actually :-p

Pretty sure you can do it even with a dynamic IP as it doesn`t actually change that often.

A friend and I theorized about this about a year ago.

Just run an apple script to check your IP and then if it changes to reference it back to your machine. Can problably even have it check for the system event that your modem connection just changed on you.

OH ... that's right linux and M$ don't use that.

Hmmm how about a cron tab and script to do the same thing.

hmmm ... definitely a dns org like thos suggested would be useful.

hmmm ... my IP changes about 1 once a month. there must be a way to check if an IP is available and choose that for you again.

You can do this easily - just download and install a web server.

What's the problem? No fixed IP? Then use one of the services mentioned in this thread.

How stable depends on your hardware, your network setup, your ISP, your backup methods etc. etc. And if you want to play Doom 3 on the same computer that's serving your website ;-)

Its gonna be as stable as your ADSL connection, but you could go for two permanent IP ADSL`s with different providers on two lines. I`m sure it can be configured to work like that.

A good friend of mine has been running his company website on the end of a 256 upload ADSL for over a year in the UK, the ADSL went down for three days once but thats the only down time he`s had and because it was a road digger that went through some major cables in the area everybody was out regardless.

Just skimming through one of them, it "seems" that one has to rely on a third party site to handle the dynamic IP.... I don't fully understand it yet.

I notice people like register.com, and I am sure others, allow you to specify more than two DNS servers.

Does this mean if I put the first two pointing to my Host, and a third one to one of my servers, that when my host goes down people trying to find my site will be able to at least see whatever I put on my server?

Finally. I've got my DSL setup at home. Brought a cheap old box and loaded up with FreeBSD to act as my gateway. Stuck an external antenna (no, not a pringless box) onto it to give wireless access to one laptop and two desktops around the house through my DSL line with Demon.
