DSL Reports
Hi

Anyone tried measuring their bandwidth speed @ :

http://www.dslreports.com/

Click on DSLR Tools.

Great fun! Try it out. Unforuntaley for me it seems that my Network Admin has capped everyone's bandiwdth usage.

My results reported:

Code:
Test running..........
** Speed 961(down)/1234(up) kbps **
(At least 19 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

Nothing to complain at. I'm still getting 28.8bps, to 33.3bps connection on my crappy telephone line Wink

Gutted. I'm wired through the University with FibreOptic/T3 but they put a limit on your bandwidth usage, obviously.

At university (using JANET) I get about 1.6mbps on a quiet day but if you have a few hundred students downloading mp3's and porn it's a little slower Cool

I got exactly the same results today running a fibre optic to a T3 connection - damn students clogging up all the bandwidth again. Argh. :-\

um.. what he means is it's not like your some 40 year old foagie. You're about 20, right? that's the average age of a college student.

Or does he mean that we're all students learning the way of life and what have you... I dunno.

Not I am not officialy a student - not for at least another 2 years. I've given myself 2 years in this job then if I'm bored I'll go to Uni. I see it more as a safety option more than anything.

My result:

Your download speed : 4447947 bps, or 4447 kbps.
Browsers would show : about a 542.9 k/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 485436 bps, or 485 kbps.
Your connection rocks .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Now of course this tells little about the quality of ones ISP. Anecdotal, and just a snapshot in time of connection speed. You also have to consider other parameters like ISP uptime, technical support, signal quality, etc. The results you see above are for @shaw.ca. However, like their predecessor (@rogers.com), they suck big time - majour issues include email problems and web connectivity issues. But still interesting nevertheless Smile

Code:
2002-05-16 11:40:26 EST: 1698 / 1851
Your download speed : 1698204 bps, or 1698 kbps.
A 207.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 1851851 bps, or 1851 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Since moving our network over to an ATM cloud it seems my connection speed is flying! Yahoo! :-)

I need to get out and clean the lines or something, looking a little slow today:

2002-05-16 12:55:59 EST: 1966 / 370
Your download speed : 1966734 bps, or 1966 kbps.
A 240 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 370073 bps, or 370 kbps.
Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!

Guess I better run the tweak and see what's slowing me down.

LOL! Smile

Living in the mountains of Colorado, the best I can hope for is wireless or satellite based internet access. Average cost for wireless is US$50.00 per month and satellite runs US$79.99 per month (with only reliable downloads, uploads have been problematic for a few neighbors I know that have it).

Distances from the telco, for residential services, are a big problem here in the states. I had DSL, at the very end of its tether (384 down/128 up) and upgraded to cable as soon as it was available.

Nope Frown I'm in a smallish village. The nearest place to me who are getting ADSL is CRanleigh (http://www.broadband1.bt.com/...me/exchange_list.asp)..but they are a good 8 miles away..so I don't think I'm gonna get hold of it for quite a while still Frown
