Anyone fancy Ruby?
Until Perl 6 comes out, and becomes a truly OO language, is anyone else tempted to check out Ruby? Freshmeat are running a good article on why you should check it out:

Of course, once Perl 6 comes out (if it ever does?) then it's a different story ;-)

I've seen Ruby around google groups before... it doesn't look too complicated to learn... Just finished downloading a Windows version so I'm gonna fool around a little this week.

perl takes a lifetime to master......I couldn't imagine wanting to learn Ruby too....it would get really confusing...

Ruby was supposedly based somewhat on Perl, so I'd expect that core functions (I saw each, foreach, while, etc. are there) are nearly identical. I don't like how there is no statement seperator. No Ruby one-liners I expect :-(

I only program in Perl, but I find PHP and C fairly legible enough to understand. Same goes with spoken languages... I speak English and Spanish (well, used to), but have no problem with reading Portuguese and some Italian.

The point: in most cases, one language is based on another, and there are always recognizable differences in structure to keep you strait.

I use both PHP and Perl. PHP has a lot of easy to use functions, whilst Perl makes certain functions, like opening a flat file, much easier. Where PHP makes it much easier to use MySQL. I find it quite hard to decide what language to use for each project I do.

Ruby doesn't look like anything special. Java is probably the best language to learn at the moment. It's overkill for most things, but it is faster then PHP and Perl anyday.

Yes, you're right. Java is the future for jobs and what have you. That's what you'll have to learn to programm PDA,s mobile phones, new interactive television etc. That's where the money is!

But it hogs server resources much more than perl.

There's be no money in Perl, though. There's more of a market for java-like technologies. Think of everything you use, like a Mobile Phone, Sky Digital, Electronic Organiser. That's where the dollars are ringing :-)

Imports are always expensive. Why the hell are we paying £4,000 more for our cars than our European counterparts?

I am setting up my computer at the moment to let me work with Java. I figure if I want to make some money I am gonna have to either learn it, or some sort of Microsoft language so I can work with .NET technology. I am hoping I don't have to resort to that Smile

Its fairly easy to setup. I have Apache/PHP/MySQL/Perl etc all setup on Windows XP, and in 15 mins will have Java/Tomcat as well.
Cheers,

sounds like a socialistic society to me .... what about the Danes they pay somewhat like 40% of their salary for taxes and such ... I could be wrong about the actual figure though.
