I think this is a good thing. In recent years, google has come to dominate the search engine industry. I think it is healthy to introduce competition.

Yes and Microsoft is really good at providing "healthy" competition so we've got everything to gain from this move and nothing to worry about.

It's a pity a few dollars that has already been pushed into a new search engine couldn't have gone towards providing PNG (image format) capacity to Internet Explorer since they've been promising it in IE for ages !

Sorry, but the day I feel sorry, for a company that has a quasi monopoly or even happy that they are providing less monopoly in a specific market is far, far away.
