On the main community page (the one you get when you are logged in as a user), it says 'set up your free email account'.

How would one go about doing this? I assume that you have to set 'AutoCreate' to no for the GMail application, but then, what kind of page would one use to set up the email account at a later stage?

I'll need to get rid of that text. Basically for apps that aren't set to AutoCreate, it's assumed that the admin will enable/disable the app based on some criteria (payment primairly).

This isn't quite flushed out yet.
