password protection problem

password protection problem
Hi!
I tried to protect my admin directory by creating .htaccess and .htpasswd exactly as described in your tutorial.

The installation procedure worked fine but if the browser prompts for user-id and password the system does not accept my password.

I tried it several times, but the result is always the same.

Do you have any idea what the problem might be?
Is there any other way to protect the directory?

Best Regards,
Hans-Georg

Did you encrypt the password before pasting it into .htpasswd?

Hi,

The best and 'easiest' way to implement a passsword protection is to go to http://www.i01.de/webmaste3.htm It is a german web site and their system will actually generate the required files for you.

Good luck

Joe

I did this but am still stuck!
I am a novice at this, so please could you explain to me what exactly i am meant to do.
I have got the code generated from this german site, but when it says create a file called .htaccess and a file called .htpasswd, what type of files should they be (.txt or .cgi) I don't know, also it tells me to put these two files in the directory that I wish to protect, but in a book I have it states:
AuthUserFile is the directory where you want the password file to reside. Don't pick the same directory as the one you want to protect!!
Please help!!!

There is no "file name"...the files are called .htaccess and .htpasswd.

For a tutorial on .htacces, go here:

I have looked at the tutorial and am still none the wiser.
The thing is that when I create these files in my text editor (notepad) it automatically saves them with a (.txt) file extension.

Well...then rename the files after you upload them to your server...you can do that via most FTP programs.

I have found a more simpler method.
GOTO:

http://nebula.spaceports.com/~kjgatter/password.zip

Download the zip file and read the readme file, very simple!!
