Verify: Request Failed (501)
From previous p it appears others have received the following message when attempting verify:

Checked 2 - Request Failed (501). Message: Protocol scheme 'http' is not supported

Has anyone figured out the solution to this problem?

Are you sure it said 'http' and not 'https'? I have never seen that error with 'http'. I have seen it with 'https' however. I remember this https problem coming up during the beta testing and Alex indicated he was going to fix it. Apparently, it didn't get fixed.

Oh, so you think your problem may be related or similar to the one "theguy" is having then? That's an odd problem he was having. I got a copy of his links.db from him and ran it on my nph-verify.cgi, both on my Win95 computer and again on my Linux server. In both cases, almost all the links returned an error code 200 OK. Only about 4 or 5 links returned a 40x error.

I have no idea as to what is wrong on his system or, for that matter, yours since you are having a similar problem. It might be a misinstalled (by the ISP) LWP module in perl. Or it may be related to the Lwp vs LWP directory names in the Links installation. And, I haven't heard back from "theguy" since I did the testing and sent him the results, so I don't know what he has done since.

If you want, put your links.db online as a text file and send me the URL. I will capture it and run a test on it just as I did for the guy. I will then send you the ouput from the results. Also let me know if it is Links v1 or v2 (theguy was a v1 problem).

I just cut and paste the message. If it says "http" I guess that is what it means. :-)

Okay, I believe you; I had no way of knowing whether you cut and pasted that or not. But in your original post you made it sound like others have had this problem and wondered if anyone had solved it yet. Well, I can't find, nor remember, ever seeing that error being posted here before. I do remember the https protocol not supported problem and, in fact, have that particular error myself.

Do you get that error for more than just ID #2? If not, then maybe something is wrong with that record. If you are getting it on all records, then something might be wrong in the %db_def variable in links.def. The URL field should look like this:

Quote:
URL => [2, 'alpha', 40, 75, 1, 'http://', '^http|news|mailto|ftp'],

The key being the part that says '^http|news|mailto|ftp']

I looked back at the message I was refering too. <http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/forum/resources/Forum2/HTML/000478.html> I guess it was somewhat different.

The error occurs on just about all the ID#s. A couple have a different error, but I don't know the status of those URLs where I do know most of the Error 501 sites are good.

I have not tinkered with any of the verify scripts, so they should be unadulterated - assuming no transfer glitches.

I do not know if the error is related to theguy's, however part of the error looked similar to his problem.

I am using V2. I installed LWP along with with everything else included in V2. I had V1 running previously and verify worked correctly at that time.

If you wouldn't mind looking at my links.db, I have put a copy at http://www.guillemot-kayaks.com/links.db

This would at least tell me if there is any problem with the database, although this strikes me as unlikely as everything else seems content with the database.

Would reinstallation of LWP make sense?

Thanks for your help

I got the file and will get back to you with the results sometime later today.
