Password Protection - Admin
Does any one know of an easy to install, free, password system for admin? I have checked the section about password protection in Resources as suggested in previous posts, but the links given there seem to be an ad for a commercial site. The main requirements again are FREE and EASY TO INSTAL (my skills in this area are minimal to say the least). Thanks for a great forum, and thanks for any advice.
Alan

All you need is to have .htaccess ability on your server, and to know about paths of the folder you want to protect, which I assume you know as you managed to setup Links 2 ok Smile

Andy your password encryption methods are not as secure as they could be, and also you turn AuthPAM off for every RAQ which ISN'T necessary. Some may want it on. (Unless it is an option but I wouldn't know because I've never used your script(s))

The point is it works for most servers. The RAQ thing was an added extra as several people requested it! If they don't need it, then they don't select the option, but they need to know if they do or don't. I have just tried to make it as simple as possible for someone to setup a password protected folder on their site with the miminum of fuss. It isn't meant to be Forte Nox Smile

Who said it had to be fort knox?....I just said it isn't as secure as it could be.

But hey, if you want to be sued as a result of someone's site being hacked then it is no skin off my nose....Smile

I mean...there isn't one single line of error checking as far as I can see....

Hey...

If your server has .htaccess you can also use the great FileMan script from.. ahem... Gossamer-Threads! Wink

Precisely. Good point.

I haven't tried the new fileman yet but I have a copy ready for uploading and it is meant to be superb.

Yeah, well, what do you expect, it is FREE! Smile

If it was being brought then that is another matter, but as I'msure you are aware time is money, and without money you are in trouble!

OK guys. I have installed Ace Password but although I get the password prompt when I enter the protected directory I then get a 401 saying:

This server could not verify that you are authorized to access the document requested. Either you supplied the wrong credentials (e.g., bad password), or your browser doesn't understand how to supply the credentials required.

Does this mean I don't have .htaccess on this server? Its an Apache, not NT, so I guess that this is OK (or is that a problem?).

As I mentioned, Andy's script needs improvement before it is suitable for public use. Sorry Andy but it is the truth as we have just witnessed.

Well, actually that is far from the truth. I have had hundreds of comments about it saying how good it is! And also the number of high rating at HotScripts.com also suggests that people find it useful and herpful! In the case of some people, there are a few problems with it, but that can never be permanently fixed for every server with every configuration!
