Empty admin frame

Empty admin frame
Hi,

Links gives me access to the admin.cgi script with no errors or problems but this one is empty...
I only see the frame borders and nothing more

Here is my links.cfg

# Paths and URL's to Important Stuff
# --------------------------------------------------------
# PATH and URL of Admin CGI directory. No Trailing Slash.
$db_script_path = "/var/www/euroside/html/cgi-bin/admin";
$db_dir_url = "http://euroside.com/cgi-bin/admin";

# URL of User CGI directory. No Trailing Slash.
$db_cgi_url = "http://euroside.com/cgi-bin";

# PATH and URL of Pages to be built. No Trailing Slash.
$build_root_path = "/var/www/euroside/html";
$build_root_url = "http://euroside.com";

# PATH and URL of What's New page. No Trailing slash.
$build_new_path = "$build_root_path/new";
$build_new_url = "$build_root_url/new";

# PATH and URL of What's Cool page. No Trailing slash.
$build_cool_path = "$build_root_path/cool";
$build_cool_url = "$build_root_url/cool";

# PATH and URL of What's Rating page. No Trailing slash.
$build_ratings_path = "$build_root_path/ratings";
$build_ratings_url = "$build_root_url/ratings";

When I check the code in the empty frames, I see that it's pointing correctly to the script.

Could somebody help me ?

The address is http://www.euroside.com/cgi-bin/admin/admin.cgi

FYI, both euroside.com and cgi-bin in links.cfg are apache aliases but they all work with a test script.

FYI2, the site is redirected by DomainDirect on a RedHat 7.0 box but I tested it locally on http://euroside.com without any more success.

FYI3, nph-build and nph-verify can be executed via telnet.

Many thanks in advanced for your helping hand!

Michel

You should re-check all of your permissions. Your .cgi files return internal server errors, while nph-build.cgi can't be executed: "Unable to copy links backup. Reason: Permission denied".

Hi Thomas,

I can execute nph-build.cgi (ending with the remark that links database is 0 byte... normal) and nph-verify.cgi telling me that 0 bad links and 0 good links were found.

Today backup exist for links, category and email DB...

BTW, is it really necessary to get those scripts working to get a working admin frame with text?

I checked also site_html.pl script and file permission are OK.

Can you please tell which script returns a 500 error ?

Many thanks,

Michel

Can you tell me what is the script for which

Why have you got the location of your cgi-bin files with http://euroside.ath.cx:8180/files_and_folders_here/, unless your server doesn't process CGI files without the port number, i would remove this. Could be what is causing the problem!!!!

Hope this helps

Andy

Michel, I also believe that your problems are server-related...

Hi Andy and Thomas,

I've got the same with http://www.manege-enchante.org.
The domain is hosted on a local machine behind the firewall of my provider. Ports 0-1024 are blocked.

Additionally, I have a DHCP lease.

This is why I subscribed to a DYNDNS domain forwarding to my local machine on port 8180.

The DYNDNS Domain (euroside.ath.cx) is linked itself to DomainDirect, to get a more sexy address.

Good remark, but executing the script using http://127.0.0.1:8180/files_and_folders/admin.cgi produces also the same empty frame admin page...

And I don't have any problem running CGI's on my other domain.

Any other clue?

Thanks to you for the help,

Michel
Weird, don't you think?

Hi, the port number won't cause the problem.

The error saying database is 0 bytes is because you need to add at least one link and one category before you build.

That's what we had established already, Paul! HOWEVER, this is not the reason for empty admin screens.

As it only seems to be the admin frame that isn't working (correct me if i'm wrong), then maybe he just wants to use the Frameless Admin Panel (available from http://gossamer-threads.com/...rces/jump.cgi?ID=298)??? How does that sound? I know it doesn't sort out the problem, but it will enable him to actually administer Links 2 without the problem of the admin page not working!!!

Hi Andy, Thomas and and all others,

Using the frameless admin frame sounds good to me!
Being logical, one can say that the problem is probably:

1- not related to virtual paths aliases or redirection
2- not related to links itself (all scripts are functional)
3- not related to on-the-fly html generated by CGI (www.manege-enchante.org use that to compose all pages)
4- not related to errors (error logs are empty)

The remaining difference is indeed the frame!

Thanks for the hint and your research, Andy.
I had the same idea but couldn't find the link in the 2.0 modification pages;

I'll try that and will keep you posted.

Greetings,

Michel

There's no need to be like that.....why are you getting upset, you aren't the one who was having the problems.

I was trying to provide solutions for michel

From reading all posts is this thread I can't see where you have already answered the question about the database being 0 bytes.

Paul, that's what Michel has stated before in this very thread. Anyhow, if I appeared to have over-reacted, please accept my sincere apology.

Love 'n' peace.

This is so unimportant be here goes....

This is all Michel said......

I can execute nph-build.cgi (ending with the remark that links database is 0 byte... normal) and nph-verify.cgi telling me that 0 bad links and 0 good links were found.

....this doesn't appear to say that Michel knows what the problem is.

Paul, sigh... "unimportant", you name it. What I wanted to say is that a database of 0 byte is not causing empty admin screens.

Yes "sigh", but that problem isn't going to go away by itself so I was giving a solution to get rid of that problem TOO!

Dear Paul and Thomas,

I thank you both very much as the idea of using a frameless admin page was the good one!

Still, it's difficult to know what caused the problem but I remain confident that this thread will help other people in my situation.

I still have very "popular" problems as I re-installed the old (4500) links site but nothing I can't fix without your precious help.

And so, for the other people, here's the situation:

- You have a RedHat 7.0 linux box
- You run a virtual Apache/1.3.14 mod_ssl/2.7.1 OpenSSL/0.9.5a mod_perl/1.24 server on a redirected port, with a redirected domain name
- All paths are correct and you don't have any error in your logs

... But your admin frame page is empty:

Use the frameless admin script pointed out in this thread.

Best regards to all,

Michel
