How do I place images infront of the Category names and also how do I adjust the indentation of the Category descriptions on the index page? What file contains the template for this?

and I believe their is a link in the Links 2 Resources section ( click on the Support link at the top of the page ) to a msg in this forum about using graphics for category.

their are a couple of mods ( i think glennu has one on his site ) for categories. I think what you are looking for is in the home.html although the "guts" are in the sub site_html_print_cat in the site_html_templates.pl file.
