Cannot make Categories...

Cannot make Categories...
Well, I made a Category. Then I made a link. Then I hit build and then I got an error message saying Error building! Links database is 0 bytes!

So then I looked for the Link I added since people here said that you get the error message when you DON'T have a link. I couldn't find the link so then I looked for the category I put the link in. Couldn't find the category either.

Please help!

Also, I have been comparing my Admin to the demo and I found that when I add a category on my server (click submit), it shows in the "main" frame the entire front page of the admin. In other words, there are 5 frames instead of 3.

Check the $db_script_url and $db_script_path variables in the links.cfg file, sounds like you may have misconfigured these variables.

No, that's not the problem because if they were misconfigured I would not be able to access admin.cgi at all.

This ERROR usually indicates that you have NOT properly configured the variables in the links.cfg. Don't be so quick to argue with others!

Well, I messed with the variable you gave me and I would not be able to access the admin.cgi file if they were wrong.

maybe they are some other variables?

thanks anyway...

i use/administer links 2.0 on a server where it works fine, and now i've installed it on a second and i've actually got the same problem where the same admin frames are opening up inside the existing frames. i've searched the forum extensivley and have found one other person with the same problem, but no solutions. here's the relevent contents of my links.cfg file:

# PATH and URL of Admin CGI directory. No Trailing Slash.
$db_script_path = "/serv2/www/grassrootstech.org/cgi-bin/admin";
$db_dir_url = "http://grassrootstech.org/cgi-bin/admin/admin.cgi";

# URL of User CGI directory. No Trailing Slash.
$db_cgi_url = "http://grassrootstech.org/cgi-bin";

# PATH and URL of Pages to be built. No Trailing Slash.
$build_root_path = "/serv2/www/grassrootstech.org/links";
$build_root_url = "http://grassrootstech.org/links";

(and in case it's an issue, i for sure installed correctly and made sure all the permissions are correct everywhere)

i'm guessing this is related: i'm still getting the "Error building! Links database is 0 bytes!" error after trying the fixes suggested in previous posts (and trying to create categories and links - but of course since all that comes up when i hit "add category" is these nested frames and not the confirmation screen, then i must not actually be sucsessfully creating categories and links, thus the 0 error).

any help you can offer is much appreciated!
thanks,
eli

I had the same problem. Then I found the problem was caused by my CuteFtp software. After re-sending some files, the problem solved! Smile

I think that the problem was caused by mistakenly sending category.def in binary mode. My suggestion is to ensure sending those files ended with *.pm, *.db, *.def in ASCII mode. Manually set the ASCII mode and force the ftp client to send them. Don't trust its default configuration.

Hope this can help you. Smile
