.httaccess couses 500 errors

.httaccess couses 500 errors
I put in the .htaccess/.htpasswd today and it coused all the cripts in my admin directroy to return a 500 error, what could be wrong? (also the password box didn't come up) I used the exact text from teh exaple in the linx FAQ. (with teh exception of the directory of course.)

Probably a misconfiguration somewhere in the files...Keep in mind that the codes provided in the FAQ only work in Apache....and if you have a newer version of Apache in your server, you may have to use different codes in the .htaccess file.
