i added some links to start the database, they show correctly, but when anyone tries to click on them, the password dialogue appears. i chmod all the index files manually to 755 but there must be a way to avoid this

You need to set the permissions of your LINKS html directory to 777 (drwxrwxrwx). Also, is the Categories you added that the password dialog box pops up or is it the Links in your directory?

If it is the former, changing the directory permissions should clear this up. If it is the latter, then you want to make sure that your jump.cgi file is NOT in a password protected directory (like your admin directory) and that you have changed its permissions to 755 (rwxr-xr-x).
