I would like to add categories by using the database.

Can we just change the flatfile categories.db and upload and regen pages?

Also - Is there a "canned" list of categories already available somewhere.

Yes, I made a list once of close to 300+ caegories :-) and it worked. Problem, way to many.

Note: do a few by hand through links,then go from there to be on the safe side.

This has been requested before and it really is not a great idea to request since it infringes intellectual property rights of Link 2.0 user's web sites since they have worked hard to design their directories.

Also, the out-of-stock wouldn't work, since all directories are different, thus using different categories.

One suggestion would be to use DMOZ dump, since DMOZ does allow users to use its directory structure (with the proper copyright and editor links).
