I use Links 2.0 and it has been and is running smoothly except for quick check and detailed verifying! I have surfed the forum tried all the advice that is available and now feel justified to ask for help! When I click on either of these two options I get a normal response as if the program is about to start checking links, but the screen does not change and it just waits until it times out. I have not got a clue why nothing is happening. I have tried uploading nph-verify.cgi again and also tried playing around with it but still the same result. I really need to start checking my links as I have now over 800 and it would be a nightmare to do it by hand.

Please help, even if this seems like basic stuff for those of you who know the answer.

Run it from telnet/ssh

It will timeout if you have quite a few links in your database or if your server has a max execution time for perl scripts.

I was hoping nobody would say that, I have never used Telnet before and from some of the stories I have heard it can be quite dangerous if you don't know what your doing. Thanks for your help anyway, I am glad that it appears to be such a simple problem.

It is only dangerous in the wrong hands.

I think a lot of hosts, (including myself and my friend) now offer SSH instead of telnet.

Sorry if I sound a bit naive on this one but what exactly is SSH?

I am now having hell with my server people as you have to apply separately for Telnet Access and they don't like giving it to people, so if I can find an alternative route it would make my life a lot easier.

There isnt really an alternative I'm afraid - apart from using ssh/telnet you would just have to not use those scripts.

Ok then, I got telnet access and use secureCRT! Logon in no problem, run nph-verify.cgi no problem, starts verifying, still no problem, stops dead after 250 links and won't go any further! I have tried 4 times now and every time it stops dead at 250, why? I got it working direct from the admin panel too, but it stops dead on 220 there, so I now have not got the faintest idea what is wrong now!
