Ok, there is a great deal going on right now...

Dreamhost.com is the best host out there(it is my host too) and I have a couple links sites setup and they work great. Dreamhost is in the process of converting to a new system(DreamHost2). When the conversion is complete DreamHost will be no more(just DH2). Here is the BEST part...the plans on DreamHost2 are about twice the price, but offer 3 times the features/space/etc. But there is a "price freeze" on all current members. For the next week or two they are letting you signup for the old host(you would be upgraded in a few weeks/month). For example, my current plan costs $25/month but the new one will be $44/month w/ more features, so I am upgraded for free at the same price, good deal huh?

Gee..that's...nice... I think Dreamhost is highly overated. With a quick search I found wantsomegetsome.net, and their unix hosting is 16.95, offers 1GB of space, MySQL, and a apparently a lot more features than Dreamhost. Check out:

Have you been with DreamHost? They are awesome...here is an example. I needed the GD.pm module installed to make a program I was using work. I emailed them and by the next morning they had gone to the site, downloaded the module and installed it on their servers.

They always respond to questions I have quickly and very enthusiasctically.

I admit their new plans are pretty pricy but you can get a $44/month plan for $25 if you signup before they elimate DreamHost1 and concentrate on DreamHost2.

I have never once heard ANYTHING bad about them. Yeah, it costs a little more...but it's well worth it. I was with tons of $9.99 and $14.99 a month hosts....yet it never worked out...or I had problems...something. I just can't speak enough good about them. And now you have a chance to get an even greater deal!

Nope. Why? Cause I'm not about to spend $10 a month for 30MB of space when I really need at least 250MB, and I can get 1GB for far less than DreamHost's $60 'Strictly Business' plan.

Now with that $43 difference ($60 [what I'd pay at DreamHost] - $17 [what I currently pay] = $43), I think I could sacrifice a little technical support, buy a book, and use my own know-how to solve my problems. (That's not to say they have bad technical support, cause they don't. They responded to my questions before I ever set up my account.)

I just don't see any sense with hosting with a company that charges so much for so little.

While we are on the subject of good hosts, I think people should tell about their bad hosts too so other people don't have to go through as much trouble!

pagecreators.net - terrible support, lots of downtime, nothing good about them

hostingplans.com - unlimited hosting is no good if you have an active site. i wanted to change my domain, no reply in MONTHS!!

invite.net - OK, but there are better out there.

good idea.. i am also looking for a new host.. planning on moving out of my dedicated server because its costing too much :)

digitalspace.net is cheap.. somewhat good.. but their guaranteed 99.5% thing is false.. not that great of support.. and my 'dedicated' ip keeps changing like once every two months

communitech.net.. i like this place.. but they aren't very good for perl developers as they will suspend your account if you even accidentally make one program with a infinite loop ;) they don't allow gossamer products..

If you ask for support, you get an email in less than an hour or two.

For $6.95 per month, I get 100MB of space, MySQL, cgi-bin, php, password protected directories, shopping cart, search engine, secure server, 50 pop3 emails and MUCH MORE.

I'm not saying any of your hosts aren't good, but I definetly would recommend mine anyday. lainterweb.com offers great hosting with fair prices and they'll even pay for all of your domain name registration fees! That's a free domain name, with no strings attached. They respond to all support requests immediately and always have a good answer and kind service. Check them out.

digihost is good, monthly for 39.95, as many domains as you want, reseller plan. 34.95 one time charge per domain. Support is really good, and they will make changes for you if you need at no extra, like config files. Webpipe for good support and cheap, mostly they are PHP, which is my first love, but they do Perl as well, and MYSQL is included in each hosting tier.

Yuck I really hate to plug my own services but I'm not going to make a cheesy advert of it like the first post in this thread.

Basically we are willing to negotiate which, IMHO, is pretty rare in a host. We have set plans but are willing to customize the plans for individuals (within reason). We also have a nice little upgrade in the works that was supposed to be complete a few days ago but will be complete by friday and we have just splashed out on half a class C license (128 IP's). There are not too many sites on the server at the moment because it is only a couple of months old so it is pretty much running like a dedicated server. It's not like (some) other hosts that shove 500 sites onto one server. We also have a good firewall in place and cgiwrap so the server is very secure. You can also backup your whole site from the control panel.
