Is there anyway (besides doing it by hand) to modify links into categories, instead of doing it one at a time?

If you feel brave, you can edit the links.db and categories.db files directly in a text editor, or import them into Excel or Access and export them back out. May be worthwhile if you are doing batch changes.
Be sure to backup first!
