Mod site no longer online
Just thought I should let everyone know:

My links 2 mods are no longer online.

For some reason unknown to me my host has taken my whole site offline and not even had
the decency to email me and give a reason or warning so I could make a backup any important files.

I have tried emailing him and have had no response. It's the second time I've been let down
by my host and it's annoying to see all the hard work I put into the sites there lost.

This will mean most of the mods will be offline for a while probably until after my exams in June when I will get the time to find
somewhere else and put everything back online. (the old ones are still available at my old spaceports site)

Good Luck!

Glenn

Sorry to hear that. My host did that to me a few months ago...they recon they e-mailed me and told me that i had been taken off for 'excessive us', but i never got that e-mail from them. I lost all of my Links 2 databases, and a lot of hard work (much like you glennu). Oh well, life must go on, as the saying goes, but man, its times like these that really test your patiences and devotion to the Internet communnity...Smile

And that is why keeping local backups of ALL files and tables within MySQL databases is imperative. You cannot depend on your hosting company to keep backups of your data and files...that is your responsiblity.

Or another approach to reduce the risk of losing data is to get a dedicated or co-located server...the price for them are coming down in the market.

Food for thought...

Yep I agree, I have a fairly recent backup of my files so it should be okay. I'm more annoyed because I haven't been given a reason and my email and messages to them haven't been answered.

'get a dedicated or co-located server...'

Not whilst I'm a student! Although I once I get round to it again I will need to give things more thought than previously, as moving a site around is becoming a pain!

Good Luck!

I would recommend reading the TOU or TOA (Terms of Use or Terms of Agreement) of your hosting company, since many hosting companies provide disclaimers like,"without prior notice...", like my hosting company does.

Yes...it would be nice if they notify users of problems, but many of them protect themselves through TOA or TOU documents, which users agree to when they create accounts.

I'm on a co-located server at the moment and it is great......I have full control over almost every aspect of the server and it is so much more fun.

I have root access and so the server can be customised to specific needs and it is less hassle than a hosted account surprisingly...(also I'm not paying for it which makes it even better).

Thanks Ed (You know who you are)
