How Can I disable the Backup files?
Hello All,
I have exceeded my disk space with over 300MB, can someone please tell me how to disable the generation of backup files by LINKS script (index.html.bak). I have 5000 files of this type in my 5000 categories. Are they important?
Where can I disable them from?

Thank you in advance for your help

Hi there,

The script doesnt create an idividual backup of every file, just a backup of the links.db email and category files in the backup directory..

It maybe this that is cloggin up your system. you could modify your nph-build.cgi to stop the script creating backups..

But if you have individual backup files for each index page i would suggest this is a server dise problem and not a script..

Someone correct me if im wrong.

Thank you for the hint; however, I think I've seen a place in the script that it says: "generate backfiles;" but I do not recall where it was.
The problem, I see in every directory two files:
- index.html and
- index.html.bak
I just need to get rid of the .bak files.
Also what it the UNIX command to remove all the *.bak files across directories and subdirectories?

Thak you for the help..

Hi there,

If there is a variable to turn off backups it will be in the links.def or cfg file i cant remeber which one off the top of my head.

As for the unix command i am not sure..

it may be better to delete all the files using ftp turn it on overnight and let it run WS_FTP does this excellently then just re-build the site..

I tried both files and nothing there. So where could it be?
Also, the UNIX command should look like:
rm index.html.bak -something (I have no idea something like /s in dos, but in unix I do not know).

Thanks for the help..

Hi!
As told before, Links 2.0 does only backups from the database! (Why should it backup the index-files? They can be rebuild from database, if this is necessary!)

The Unix-Command for deleting recursive is

rm *.bak -R

but the problem is, the it only will enter dirs with a name following the form *.bak! (This all will be wrong, I'm just sitting at my windows-box, and can't look into the man-pages.)

I don't think Links is creating the backup files you're talking about! Links backup files look like 7-May-2000.shtml or 10-May-2000.links.db. These are in the links/admin/backup/ and pages/ folders.

Not a Links problem; something else's creating the files. Wink

My mistake... my apology.. I just found out that I have a peral script that runs across all directory and replace & symble in all index.html files with "&" so I can use something link News_&_Media in the category names. Therefore, this script created the backup files..

Anyway, thanks for all your help..
