Initially, I removed all CSS references and css file, but now I am using my own CSS file, which uses CSS1 codes NOT CSS2 codes, which the
links.css contains. CSS2 codes are not compatible in most Netscape browsers, except version 6.01.
I used to be a critic of CSS, but after researching usability issues with different populations of users, including visually impaired, I realized that using CSS is more user-friendly than standard HTML font and alignment codes.
So, I would recommend writing your OWN CSS file that contains CSS1 codes and then replace the existing
links.css file with the one you write.
Plus using CSS is much easier to manage, then having to manually edit all your template files with different font or alignment codes when you want to change the look and feel of your LINKS generated web site. If you want to make font changes, you only have to edit one or two files depending on how user-friendly you want to make your site. I use two different CSS files...one for MAC (NS 3.0, 4.73, 6.01, MIE 3.0, 4.X) and PC/Mac (NS 3.0, 4.6, 4.73, 6.01, MIE all versions). I use a .js file to check the browser and OS, then it "prints" the relevant CSS file based on those two variables.
