CSS to remove or not

CSS to remove or not
I am debating whether or not to remove css from my links2 site. I don't have my site running yet, and figure it would be much easier to add the necessary html now, before I get too much further into it. I wanted to get some feedback on whether it is worth it or not. Do most links2 webmasters use CSS or standard html?

I would remove them if i were you. I found that CSS etc don't work very well with tables etc. I used it in my Links 2 templates which used tables, and it totally f*****d it up.....

Initially, I removed all CSS references and css file, but now I am using my own CSS file, which uses CSS1 codes NOT CSS2 codes, which the links.css contains. CSS2 codes are not compatible in most Netscape browsers, except version 6.01.

I used to be a critic of CSS, but after researching usability issues with different populations of users, including visually impaired, I realized that using CSS is more user-friendly than standard HTML font and alignment codes.

So, I would recommend writing your OWN CSS file that contains CSS1 codes and then replace the existing links.css file with the one you write.

Plus using CSS is much easier to manage, then having to manually edit all your template files with different font or alignment codes when you want to change the look and feel of your LINKS generated web site. If you want to make font changes, you only have to edit one or two files depending on how user-friendly you want to make your site. I use two different CSS files...one for MAC (NS 3.0, 4.73, 6.01, MIE 3.0, 4.X) and PC/Mac (NS 3.0, 4.6, 4.73, 6.01, MIE all versions). I use a .js file to check the browser and OS, then it "prints" the relevant CSS file based on those two variables.

I would like to see how my pages look in different browser platforms, and versions. Is there any software available to let you preview pages, or is the only way to download all the different browsers. I've searched a little on the topic and the only thing I seem to keep finding are error checkers for the different browsers.

Uh...you simply go to the browser's web sites and download the different browsers...

Like:

IE: http://www.microsoft.com/
Netscape: http://www.netscape.com/
Oprah: http://www.opera.com/
Lynx: http://lynx.browser.org/
Links: http://artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~mikulas/links/

And a great centralized site to find out about web client technologies (browsers), go to:

http://browserwatch.internet.com/

Also, the web site I linked above (W3C) offers information about different web client technologies as well.

Yep, that's what I thought I might have to do. I really didn't want to have to download 5 or more browsers, just for that purpose. I was hoping there was a way around it. I've been checking out w3.org. It seems to have lots of good information.

Thanks

Welp...what you should do is analyze your TRAFFIC LOGS and check to see what are the major browsers being used to hit your web site (and web browsers do vary depending on the type and location of web visitors)...then download the top three to test your web pages....
