alternate categories listing
First let me say that I have checked all the forums and the resources
and found nothing to what I am looking for, stuff was close. I tried it,
ruined alot of stuff, restored, did over again, restored, and that cycle
went on for a while.

Here is what I am looking for, very simple, yahoo style sub catrgories
for all but the main home page.

Example:

http://dir.yahoo.com/Science/Computer_Science/

The categories on this page are listed by bullets in
order and in two colums, then the links are listed
below.

On the front page, we want it stay like we currently
have it:

http://www.mimanet.com/test99.html

Thanks in advance for the help,
-Morbius

Okay...I think that I gave you the wrong FAQ...

Anyway...once again....here is what you do:

1) Use the Yahoo Subcategories Mod in the sub site_html_print_cat routine .

2) Use the original sub site_html_print_cat routine and call this routine sub site_html_print_subcat.

3) Then in the sub build_category_pages, change all occurences of &site_html_print_cat with &site_html_print_subcat.

I REALLY hope this is clear now...if not, I don't know what to tell ya.

Great and thanks, I thought that faq look strange.

Now which yahoo sub cat mod, there seems to be a several and I thought I tried them all, but I did not change what you mentioned.

BTW, it seems the FAQ on how to have different category layout with respect to home page layout is missing, that was the one that I was asking you about.

Now which yahoo sub cat mod
Take your pick...some people have been more successful with Subcategories like Yahoo v.2.0, which can be found in this forum, others have found Subcategories like Yahoo v.2.1 (which I use) to be much easier to install and configure, and others have had success with the Yahoo Subcategories Mod v.1.0 that Widgetz originally wrote awhile back and is linked in the Resource Center.

Yes...there seems to have been some problems with transferring data from the old site to the new site.

Eliot,

We are getting there ... I have installed the 2.1 yahoo mod and did the changes that you mentioned.

Now I have the print_cat and print_subcat, the print_cat is just the way we want it.

On the secondary pages only the counts show, no sub cats ( http://www.mimanet.com/Arts_&_Literature/ ), before I started digging into things and possibly break everything again, can I ask you for ideas ?

Thanks,

Eliot,

Never mind the previous post, I found that the mod builds the sub from the description and not the subs title.

So my real question is as follows:

How do I take $subcat and create a $subcat_clean that just whats between the slashes /test/ and use that in the output statement of the named section ?

Example:

title (cat) = /arts_&_literature/greek_literature

subcat_clean = greek_literature

Thanks,
-Morbius

You are really complicating the issues....

As I mentioned before you use the ORIGINAL sub site_html_print_cat and re-name it sub site_html_print_subcat....follow the rest of my instructions....This will allow you to have the "clean" subcat name in your Category pages.

Eliot,

I got it...., you are getting a little too strong ...

No where does it say that the description of new category is what will be displayed of the subcat. So after screwing with it for it bit I see how it works. Now I am correcting the formatting and we are almost done.

I do really appreciate your help, I know this category question has been asked a million times. When we are done with this project, I will sit down write this all up in the most of simplistic manor so anyone can get can do it with asking the same old question.

Thanks again you saved me a ton of time,

Read my suggestions more carefully and try out the suggested codes...before raising questions.

Welp...before doing that make sure that there are no existing FAQs or Modifications before expending energy and time on a project like this.

AnthroRules

I cant follow what you mean here at all.

Ive got the the state of getting the yahoo mod working except for 2 things

1. As yet the subcategory's arent being displayed using bullet points - I dont think this is part of the mod - but can you give me instructions on how to achieve this.

2. The subcategories are displaying on the index page in large font. How can I get them to justify left & be in small font.

Also how does this mod interrelate with the 1st & simpler search categories mod.

Thanks

Simon
