Wish List for non-link directory

Wish List for non-link directory
I would like to see the new versions easer to set up for non-links, or links/nonlinks combo sites. This would be nice for sites that have user added information that isn't necessarly link based. The ability for users to modify information that is non-url related is currently very difficult to setup, for those of us not schooled in perl. I don't know how common this is, but I think it would be a good thing.

To use non-link (such as local articles) you need to get rid of the 'validity' check in the .def files (just delete the http: stuff via the admin->table->update area).

Then, use the modified jump.cgi I've posted at least once. It jumps to internal links unless it sees the http: in which case it treats it as a full URL and jumps external.

This is not the kind of behavior you want if you are running a links site, so building it in for the unsuspecting would be confusing. The same basic mod works for the NG version as well, to use internal and external jumps. With the detail_page.cgi you can also run as schizophrenic a site as the FAQ where links may not exist at all. Ignore the broken links...that is due to how I installed the beta4, and not the detail_page.cgi/jump.cgi stuff.

The NG version is much more flexible, and handles this sort of stuff better too.

How do I set the modify part so visitors can modify their non link entries? I have tried but can't get it right.

Oops, I am using NG. I must have posted in the wrong forum.

When you say "modify non link parts" do you mean the attachments? Or do you mean the problem that I haven't had a chance to explore about the modify routine looking for a URL rather than an ID number?

I haven't beat that to death, but I didn't notice that first run. With the stable release on the way, and many new features added and many subtle bug fixes, I've sort of held off on more development. I worked out the big things, so hopefully when this comes out, I'll be able to bring my primary sites up quickly. In doing so, I'll hit almost every feature bug (if they still exist) <G> except foreign character and non-indexed search problems. (About the only two features I am not using on at least one of the sites).

But, yes... do try to keep NG questions in the NG forum. It helps prevent confusion, since it's almost as different from the 1.1x versions as the 1.1x versions are from the flat file ones <G> :)

Alex is promising today, barring any newly discovered bugs.
