Is it possible to span the what's new page but not the categories? Sorry if this question is redundant.

Not s far as I know. The span stuff is defined for category/cool/new pages, and there is a seperate option for search results.

You could get away with hacking the routine which builds the cool pages, so they don't have the LIMIT in there.
