htaccess and htpasswd files problem! Help!
Hi there!

I have two sites which use Links SQL.

One I had not updated in quite a while and I forgot the password to get to the admin panel.

I do not have shell access, so I searched on here for a solution.

Someone suggested deleting the htacess and htpasswd files. I did this and can now get into the admin panel.

However, it is prompting me to set a password and I don't know how to restore those files I deleted. (I have no programming skills at all).

I thought I could just drag them over from my other Links SQL site. That worked, but then I prompted me for a password again... the password for my other site doesn't work on this site.

Then I thought I would just go ahead and delete those files again so I could update my site.... but it won't let me save changes.

Is there someone who can help me though this? Please?

Thank you!
Paula S.

Just click on the link on that page to create a new username/password. Or you can go Setup => Admin Password to get to that page.

Hi, Adrian!

Thank you for your reply. I think I have a bigger problem now though.

Before I got your reply, I got frustrated and decided to just go to set up and restore the site to the defaults. Turns out I don't know the information to do that... and don't really want to anyway.

However, now anytime I try to go to the admin page it goes to Links SQL setup.

Is there a way to cancel that and go back to what I had?

Thanks for your help!

To cancel that setup, you'll have to edit the admin/Links/Config/Data.pm file, and change the key 'setup' => '0' to 'setup' => '1'

Hi again, Adrian!

Thank you for continuing to help me! You've helped me get closer to fixing this.

I changed the setup back to one and can get into the admin page now.

Then I go to setup... password.

I get the screen to add user and password.

...but it won't add the password because I don't have the htaccess file uploaded. When I upload the htaccess file... it asks me to login... and I don't know the password!

What next? I do appreciate it very much!

Paula

If there is no .htaccess and/or .htpasswd files, the setup should create new ones for you.

If the files are not created then it could be:

Some server setups do not allow that in cgi-bin directory.
You would need to contact your hosting provider to modify your
<VirtualHost..>

</VirtualHost>
So that the necessary files are created and populated once you setup your password from admin.
